I had the pleasure to stay here for three nights recently, and enjoyed the hospitality and vibe at the Aviator. In a sense it was low key - the staff were polite but not effusive, the food was very acceptable but hardly high cuisine, the room was neat and tidy but not particularly large. Nice queen size bed though ...

What was particularly good was the willingness of the staff to deal with problems. I needed a new suitcase, and the staff went to some trouble to organise a trip to the airport for me on their shuttle bus - it only took 20 minutes or so and my problem was solved. Mind you, I would rather have gone to the local shopping mall where the suitcase would have been a whole lot cheaper! It was closed at the time.

I would definitely check in at the Aviator again. Just remember though it is near the airport and noise from take-off and landing continues through the night. The windows are double-glazed (not usually the case in South Africa) and that helps greatly. But then the aircon unit in the room was quite noisy. You can't have it all ways at these prices, I suppose.

Oh, I have to add that the focaccia starter in the restaurant (toasted, topped with herbs, garlic, sun dried tomato etc!) was to-die-for.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the airport runways and might have noise problems - ask when checking in.

The Aviator Life Hotel decor is a charming blend of Metro/Industrial chic with a distinct retro vibe and an aviation twist. The main hotel consists of deep colonial wrap around verandahs, with large over sized lounges, overlooking the indigenous gardens enveloping the swimming pool, which lends itself to the South African Life Style. This architecture reminded me so much of my home town Morningside in Durban, and it gave me a sense of home away from home!
On Saturday early eve after a long day of shopping in Sandton and taking the Gautrain 'Home' we found ourselves nursing large cold, cold refreshments from 'The Buzz Bar', as we sat undercover in this area of the Life Hotel and reflected on the days travels, listening to the tranquility of the birds as they were getting ready to nest, whilst watching the African sun burn it's brilliant hue of reds and golds and finally resting it's weary head from the naked light of day. A peaceful setting for the tired traveller, indeed.
The atmosphere at dinner was very inviting, The Buzz restaurant with its wooden floors, plush seating and low lighting made for a cosy evening setting. I ordered the fillet steak with chips, cream spinach and pepper sauce (very delicious), my friend ordered the 'Durban' lamb curry and being Durbanites, we were skeptical, however it proved to be a very good, aromatic curry with roti and rice and sambals
The time spent at this hotel was very relaxing and the staff were unbelievably attentive. Lance our driver took us to and fro to the Rhodesfield Gautrain Station with the utmost ease and he was always on time and always greeted us with a smile.
Our bedroom was neat, minimalistic, retro design and although the room consisted mainly of the two beds, it was ample sufficiency for a few nights stay. Unfortunately we did have the road facing room and the street noise could be a problem for people who are noise sensitive.
The hotel is not situated in the best location, it is in the heart of the industrial area of Kempton Park, however it is only 3 kilometres drive from the airport and the hotel provides all the transit one requires, which is included in the package. Because the area was fairly far from the happening places in Johannesburg, as two women travellers, we decided not to venture too far from the hotel at night. But overall this was a lovely hotel, with a lovely atmosphere and I enjoyed my stay here. If you are on business or in transit to another destination then this is certainly a very good option. kimssouthafrica
