4 day business trip from UK and can only praise as a continual traveller it is such a relieve to find such an Oasis rather than the global 4 and 5 star hotels. A special mention for Christine the chef whose cuisine is superb to match her personality. This will now be my home from home in Johannesburg. Thank you for the service and hospitality.

We had only one night here but were totally pleased. The building is beautiful, contemporary, comfortable and elegant, and the grounds are lovely. The best surprise was the availability of a marvelous dinner with a great chef who recommended wines and prepared delicious food. So nice not to have to leave the premises, especially for a short stay. We would definitely return.

Hi there,
Thank you very much for your review and the good comments and marks you awarded us. I will forward this review to our chefs Christine and TK, who are both, together with Jet and Gloria, our duty managers, busy with a wine pairing and serving training course to keep up to speed with the latest developments. We wish you well and many more happy travels! Otti & Zelda

I booked here based on the great feedback here on Trip Advisor for a two night stopover in Joburg, and I am so glad I did! I have always stayed at the Intercontinental in the past and while the airport location of the Intercontinental is convenient if you are on a short stopover (less than 12 hours), if you have the time, do yourself a favor and book the ARH.

This is definitely a Boutique Hotel and not a Guest House—the difference being the rooms are all independent of the common areas with their own entrances and very luxurious and contemporary. The back yard oasis is delightful with mature growth like giant palm trees and a beautiful respite away from the concrete jungle, autos and planes you get on the patio at the Intercontinental.

Musa, their wonderful driver (or Otti the owner himself if they are busy) will greet you after baggage claim and drive you in a Mercedes minivan to their location in a gated upper class suburban neighborhood, only a 10-15 minute drive that is not affected by traffic no matter what time of day. They track your flight and know exactly when you are arriving. They will even pick you up (or drop you off) at Federal Air if you are coming in on the air shuttle from the Sabi Sands or Kruger so you don't have to be shuttled back to OR Tambo by Federal Air.

The lounge at the top of the spiral staircase is a delightful reading room with all sorts of travel books (that are current!), and their conference room looks fabulous for intimate personal development seminars or executive creative/planning meetings where you really need to get some productive work done. The environment is just lovely and looks very conducive to productivity and has AV equipment built in.

All of the staff is world class and Otti and Zelda are hands-on and make sure they check in with you at dinner. They used to own a mobile safari company and a construction business and Zelda is an artist, so between them they have created a beautifully decorated facility with all sorts of special touches from their travels throughout Africa.

As others have stated, Christine and TK in the kitchen are talented ladies and they make some outstanding food. Everything is cooked Ala Minute so if you have special dietary issues I'm sure if you let them know in advance they will happily accommodate your needs.

Others have mentioned internet not being free and it appears they have heard people's pleas and now offer voucher for enough access to check emails and touch base. However, if you need to do some serious work or send files or photos back and forth you will need to buy more access from the provider AlwaysOn. I feel that is fair and reasonable as I know how outrageous the internet costs are in Africa, especially for businesses like this who have to have an enterprise plan to accommodate high volume usage.

Also there have been multiple comments about the rates vs. perceived value and I feel it is very fair, especially compared to the rates at the Intercontinental and the inclusive breakfast and reasonable food and drink prices. I had an amazing Crepe for lunch yesterday that was only 55 Rand. I'm sure it would have cost at least double that anywhere else.

I definitely look forward to using this property as my future Joburg stopover hotel.

Calling the ARH a guesthouse or B&B does not do it justice. There is extraordinary attention to detail in every aspect. The food, the rooms, and the grounds are all way above expectations. The place is really gorgeous and every staff member was helpful, cordial and attentive. We stayed just two nights in May, but would love to spend more time here. The garden is especially nice. Otti, please pass on thank you's to all. Since airport transfer was included it worked perfectly for us, but the Kempton Park location may not be ideal for all Johannesburg visitors.

Dear Mr. Harnois,
Thank you for your review, I will most certainly pass on your thank you to all the staff, they appreciate it very much when a review gets posted. It was nice having you and the rest of the group with us for 2 days and I am glad that you had a good experience with our team.
Yes, our location is to the east of Johannesburg Down Town and the busy Sandton area but only 10km from the Airport and more or less in the middle between Johannesburg and the capitol Pretoria.
With only 9 rooms and being situated in a quiet residential suburb, we keep the property exclusive for our in-house guests and others by invitation only. This way we are able to attend to every detail and requests from our guests.
Best regards and happy travels, Otti & Zelda Meijer

After my third time stayed in ARH, it has become more or less my home in South Africa. The staff and the owners created the special mix of the personal touch with a professional concept. As a base for all my customer visits in the country it feels like a safe haven incl free transport service to the airport and a great kitchen operated by Christine!

This was a wonderful and peaceful out of the way find. My husband and I, along with 4 friends spent the last night of our South African vacation here and found it to be the perfect way to unwind before the long trip home. Chef Christine prepares fabulous meals in the small kitchen and all the staff go out of their way to ensure the you enjoy your stay. The hotel is very unique being in a residential neighbourhood but it adds to the charming calm.
We all agreed that we would certainly recommend African Rock to any others travelling to Johannesburg.
