We booked 70 people on a sports tour at the Airport Inn. Although the shuttles from the airport to the lodge were a bit slow in coming, the rates were extremely reasonable and included great breakfasts and all our shuttles backwards and forwards to Festival Mall and those shuttles were spot on time every time and whenever we needed them. The kids on the tour had freedom and space to move around with the lodge grounds which were safe and secure. So much better than being couped up in a hotel room and corridor! There were 2 stunning swimming pools although the water was a bit chilly heading into winter, they still made use of the big pool. The gardens were lovely with lots of tables and chairs to relax around. The rooms - although different configurations and sizes, were clean and comfortable - and they are building more units which will then better accommodate our big group next time :-) Very friendly staff, always willing to help - thank you Willem for your patience with all our requests. Amazingly enough this lodge is practically on the doorstep of the airport and yet the plane noise was much less here than it is at my house which is about 20km from my local airport. Thank you for a lovely 4 night stay.

Room Tip: I think the rooms facing the front gates were a bit noisier than those on the pool side. Some rooms...

When we arrived at the property we didn't look at the room before we paid our money. We then entered the room which was dirty, tired and not at all what we expected. We then explained our dissapointment to the staff who were very rude and unhelpful. One gentleman continued to text on his phone whilst we tried to explain our dissatisfaction to him. His customer service was appauling. Needless to say, we checked out immediatly (with no refund) and would not recommend it to anyone.

Although the accommodation is a bit tired and shabby, we had an excellent "cooked before your eyes" full breakfast and the staff went out of their way to help. Lunch and dinner are a bit more unusual - home cooked but microwaved and served in containers - but still tasty. If you have a late flight home you can also book a day room so that you don't have to sit around the airport for hours.

To start with, they answered all my emails very quickly and the free shuttle bus from the airport was super efficient. I phoned them on arrival and they were there in 5 minutes to pick me up.
The place itself is very close to the airport which makes it ideal for stays while in transit although it is probably not where you would stay for a longer visit.
While a previous reviewer has described this place as shabby, I would describe it as anything but. Sure, the decor is old fashioned (think floral curtains, matching bedspreads, pine furniture) but everything both inside and outside the room is well maintained and very clean. I would suspect this is a lovingly maintained family business.
Breakfast was far better than I had expected.

stayed here with the family on arrival in Johannesburg and this place felt like a glorified back-packers hostel. The welcome was excellent but the accomodation is a bit tired and shabby and breakfast was canteen-like.

We stayed in Southern Sun at the aiport on night of departure and actually paid less for this than the Airport Inn, which was muh better value (good standard of accomodation, service and superb breakfast choice).

We stayed one night on 4 Jan 2012, booked online at OR Tambo airport having arrived from Nairobi at 1220. I was looking for a room nearby with a pool for my 11yo daughter to cool off in as the weather was very hot: we only booked this room because of the large pool shown on the website, and the cost was reasonable: £48.The room was clean, spacious and adequately equipped, but it had large windows which caught the sun, and there was no air conditioning so the room was very hot. It also faced the airport and was noisy with the window open, also a security risk. The pool area at reception was overlooked by young not-too-savoury men sitting around drinking beer and I felt uncomfortabl swimming in that pool, so we found the large pool shown on the website, and ignored the notice saying PRIVATE AREA: they had shown the big pool on the website which was the only reason I had booked, therefore we were entitled to use it, sign or no sign. But I did not feel comfortable swimming in disobeyment of the sign. But the bed was comfy, and the breakfast good. So it ended up as an OK place to stay - but I'll look for better next time I need a room near OR Tambo. I had hired a ca so didn't use the shuttle service, but the notices around the hotel suggested that giving guest-friendly shuttle service was not their top priority.
