“Haven Near Airport”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

This is the perfect place to recover from a long overseas flight. The airport pick-up was so convenient and worry free. Although the approach to the Safari Club is through an industrial area, once inside the gates you are a world away from it all. Cozy, clean with a super friendly staff, it was really pleasant! After a great nights sleep , and a fabulous breakfast, it was another ten minute ride back to the airport to pick up a rental car. Super Deal! Would absolutely stay there again.

We enjoyed a 2 night stay here after a very long journey to recover a bit before going on safari. Found it to be a very good choice versus a corporate hotel. Charming gardens, spacious room with comfortable beds, delightful staff. Breakfast was terrific. Stuck to steak & french fries at dinner and had no complaints. Neighborhood very iffy, but they have their security down and felt completely safe. Air traffic noise depends on which flight path they are using, but was never an issue (we had room at rear away from airport direction, so that helped too.) Highly recommended.

The close proximity of the hotel to OR Tambo is a definite plus as an overnight stop-over. It is also near the conference venue I attended a course at. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the friendliest staff I have ever encountered in South Africa or internationally. The rooms were spacious and clean and there is a restaurant on site. I ordered a meal to be served in my room and It arrived fast and warm. The chef delivered it himself and is a lovely character.
The convenience of the proximity of the airport however means the hotel is in the flight path of all the air traffic departing and arriving there. The air traffic decreased significantly after 10pm and I had a good night's rest.

For an overnight stay in Johannesburg, it's a winner. They meet and greet you in the arrival's hall at the airport, a 10 min transfer to the guest house, hassle free check in and a clean, modern room. The honesty bar works, the dinner is really good (would recommend to all) and the amenties are all you will require. A home away from home.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are quieter, esp further away from the road

We stayed at Safari Club on two separate occasions as a layover hotel between flights on our African Safari. What a lovely place. The rooms are very spacious and clean-but simple. The hotel uses an honour system with the bar and you are welcome to help yourself to drinks when needed-just be sure to jot it down and the charge appears when you check out. We were very impressed by the very polite and professional porters and drivers (a shuttle service was included as part of our stay-to and from the airport) at the hotel. A nice, help yourself breakfast, is also included, a nice way to start your day. The hotel does offer a dinner at an additional charge-it’s convenient but not recommended. If you can order in or eat at the airport that might be a better choice. Overall a nice hotel in very close proximity to the airport-we recommend it.

The Safari Club is a good alternative to staying at the overpriced hotels at Johannesburg Airport.

The approach to the hotel is a little disconcerting, but once you pass through the double security gates you are in a pleasant garden enclave with rooms build around that garden. Do not expect a luxury upmarket hotel - this is a perfectly functioning 3+ star establishment. The rooms are somewhat dark and decor wise approaching a refurbishment. However, the room was functional, the bed comfortable and above all it delivered a restful stay. Similarly, do not expect that at this location you will be able to go for a stroll - once you are in you are in. Sandton is a short distance away and the hotel offers transfers there - which would enable you to stroll and to shop in a safe, non threatening environment.

The food and the service were fine.

When I looked at my bill at the end of the stay I would have to say that I received very good value for money. As long as you understand what this hotel is and what it isn't you will not be disappointed. I debated whether this was an average or above average experience. In a number of respects - eg price value is deserved the higher rating, but I elected for the "average" given location and decor.

Stayed here in between visiting SA and flying home. The hotel offers free transfers between airport, which is extremely useful. I must say it was a bit concerning driving to the hotel, its location does make you feel nervous, but once you drive through the 2 security gates (peace of mind security wise), it is like a small oasis set in picturesque gardens. Rooms are spacious and clean with comfortable beds and the usual facilities. Staff were welcoming and friendly and did their upmost to accommodate individual requests. There is sun loungers and a small pool, which after a hectic holiday is much appreciated (weather permitting!). A lounge area is provided, as is the previously mentioned honesty bar, where you get drinks and just note down what you've consumed and it is added to bill on check out. Dinner is available at 140 Rand, though this is the only disappointing side of the Safari Club. The quality was poor and you have a choice of 2 meals. However, the hotel is quite happy for you to order take out (menus are provided in the rooms). Would use it as a stop off point in future, far easier than travelling into the city and nicer than most accommodation within the airport boundary.
