I was in Joburg on business and just got tired of hotels, and got referred to this little gem in the heart of old Melville. Close to Auckland Park and the University of Joburg it was ideally situated for me. Check in was friendly and I got to my VERY special and well appointed room in no time. The room has everything a first class hotel has got and more! The vibe of Melville is very relaxed and the owners own a bar (Ratz) and a restaurant (Melon) just up the street, so dinner and drinks are sorted! And top quality I might add! Security in the area is very good and I felt safe at all times. The owners even sent me home with my own guard! A very nice touch! All in all a very good choice, will not stay in an unpersonal hotel again!!

Room Tip: If all the rooms are like mine, then you are spoilt for choice!

Lovely decorated studio style apartment.
We were recommended to stay in Melville for the food & beverage scene, but while I'd imagine it would be a very livable suburb, I was expecting something more. The area is not very convenient for a tourist wanting to visit the usual tourist attractions.

We arranged for a guide to show us through Soweto. A chap named Dave picked us up. While he was a nice enough bloke, we were under the misapprehension that he would be walking us through the significant history of Soweto.
All Dave amounted to was a driver who moved us from A to B. His knowledge of the whole Soweto conflicts didn't amount to much at all.

Has a good location and very kind housekeeping staff, but I would not stay here again. Melville has many guest houses and we have stayed in three others that we liked much better. As this was a business trip we made it very clear that we would need working internet and were repeatedly assured this was not going to be a problem... We were charged for it, but it never worked. We were also charged an outrageous amount for laundry. The room was tiny and the bathroom/shower seemed almost improvised. The fact that we were charged for an extra night had escaped my attention until I came back to the US and our office manager alerted me to it. Could have been an honest mistake of course.

The Saffron Guest house is cute & spacious, a reasonable option for staying in a safe part of Johannesburg. We stayed in room #1 - it was pleasant, with a small, separate lounge room to the main bedroom, but not as charming as the website photos suggested. The room was very quiet; note though that the outside courtyard fronts the main street, and so the courtyard itself is not particularly quiet.

Breakfast is included in the room rate, which is taken at the De la Creme Cafe just next door. We found breakfast to be ordinary, the cafe tired-looking, and with disinterested staff.

The safe in our room did not work, and there was a small hole in the bathroom wall that exposed the plumbing inside it - but these were small points, and would consider Saffron to be reasonable, average accommodation in Joburg.

We stayed at Saffron House for just a night in August 2006. I think it only has 5 rooms and because it's so small the service is really friendly. Noelene came to pick us up from the airport (costs extra) gave us a running commentary and manged to book us on a Soweto tour on the 45 minute journey.
The Guest House is located right in the centre of Melville. Nobody stays in the CBD anymore and this suburb seems fairly safe with lots of nice restaurants. I think we didn't choose the best one (the Curry House) but it was passable.
The house itself is a beautiful Saffron colour. The decor is all stone and brick and so our room was pretty cold even with the heater on. The bed however was comfy and warm although the shower was a bit basic. The style is kind of a mix of Moroccan/Mexican and all the rooms are set around a pretty and relaxing central courtyard.
If we went to Joburg again we'd be happy to stay in Melville although we'd try The Saffron's sister property, The Space, which is contemporary and just around the corner.
All in all, pretty, reasonable value with helpful and smiling staff.
