Owner description: (Open by appointment only.) The stories that lived (and still live) within the walls of the Lindfield Victorian House Museum tell a tale of Johannesburg during an era that, more than any other, shaped urban Johannesburg as we know it today. A tale of the day-to-day family life and fashion trends, masters and servants, elegance, high culture, high teas, social etiquette and intellectual achievements. The spirit of this amazing era lives on in the museum and visitors not only learn its cultural history, but also experience the ambiance of a bygone world.

Visited this amazing museum with 6 girlfriends...we were all in awe of the magnificence of this truly well run privately owned museum. Katherine the owner & guide is more than knowledgeable on her subject - grew up & lives in the home today & has collected every piece on display...there is so much to see..impossible to take it all in on one visit - will definitely have to return to see what we missed on the 1st time round. 22 Rooms jam packed with victoriana. Were served the most delicious tea/coffee, cake & savories afterwards all inclusive of our visit fee of R70 (R50 pensioners) worth every cent. Recommend this 100 times over again.

Absolutely wonderful! This place is a delight. I have visited before and will go back again as there is too much to take in at one time. The house is filled to overflowing with Victorian curiosities and items. The guide dresses in a period costume and is extremely knowledgeable. A living museum. Highly recommended

It's an English house in Victorian times, which is around 1900. Before going, I did note that it seemed quite odd to be visiting something about England when one is in South Africa.

But the museum was amazing! There were so many little details and stories within each item in the house which made it incredibly authentic. I literally felt transported back in time when I walked in the house. The owner, Ms Love, would explain to us about each miscellaneous item in the house, and it was apparent that if she really is to explain everything she knew, it would take dozens of hours.

Thus, walk in a room and ask whatever that catches your eye!

We opted to have high tea after the tour. I would suggest to do the same, as one could really then reflect back on the stuff one saw, relaxing one's legs, and enjoying the food. This beat all other museums I saw in South Africa.

To get there, you can take the metro to Grosvenor Station (around 4 stations away), and walk north (mostly uphill) for around 30 minutes. From Jo'burg main train station, the walk would be around 1 hour.

Katharine is an awesome hostess and is willing to answer any and every question you might have regarding the Victorian way of living. The most amazing items are found in the house and one learns a lot.
Well worth the entrance fee and the eats at the end was absolutely wonderful (and to think it was all prepared in the traditional, old fashioned, Victorian way – no modern appliances used). Amazing! I will go back again any time and surely tell everyone I know about this place.

Fascinating and authentic experience that takes you back to the 1900's. Well worth it, wrap up warm in winter.
