“Great boutique hotel”
Reviewed November 17, 2008

After a terrible and too long stay at a large chain hotel in Sandton, I decided to change hotel. Following the great reviews on TripAdvisor, I selected The Peech. In the end I spent most of the period between July and early November 2009 at this lovely hotel. I was staffed on a project in Johannesburg.

This funky hotel has only 16 rooms. The rooms are spread across four houses surrounded by a lush garden with a swimming pool. This awesome hotel is an oasis of tranquility.

The rooms are spacious and have a lot of light (there are many windows). The interior design is modern (it is not easy to find a design hotel in South Africa) with a an African twist. Try to get one of the rooms on the upper floors as these have higher ceilings and have even more light. The rooms even include an audio system for your iPod. Unfortunately, there is no fridge (the hotel does provide a bottle of water every day) and the choice of TV channels is very limited.

The restaurant of the hotel is known for its outstanding kitchen. I especially liked the choice for breakfast (everything is freshly made).

The hotel is well located. It is close to Melrose Arch (with an excellent choice of restaurants, such as The MeatCo, Orient and Moya). Rosebank Mall is also nearby.

During the 4 months I stayed at this hotel I really felt at home. The staff was very friendly and made me feel part of the 'family'. Gosh, I already miss it!

After having spent almost 10 months in Johannesburg, I am sure this is the very best hotel in town.

Comfortable, well-equipped rooms that feel like the lap of design-forward luxury. I loved the iPod dock and daily in-room French-press, gourmet breakfasts and attentive staff. We had two stays separated by a week-long tour and everyone remembered our names. Warm, friendly smiled made us literally feel at home.

The one downside is that it is really a taxi ride from any commercial center in town except Melrose Arch itself.

BY the way there is a nice park and bird sanctuary across the street for those who would venture on foot.

Forget chain hotels, however luxurious, when you are in South Africa and stay at places like this. We stayed in boutique hotels during our trip to SA in June 2008 and found them all superb and actually cheaper than some of the chains.
The Peech Hotel is in a quiet location in Melrose, not far from the Wanderers Cricket stadium and guests have the use of the health club next door.
Rooms are large and very comfortable and the food is absolutely first class. It was the middle of winter but the pool area looked very inviting and must be lovely in summer.
All in all a great hotel experience - thoroughly recommended!!

A wonderful property in a good part of Jo'burg, the Peech meets nearly all boutique hotel criteria, however there are a few key issues:

Having booked a car and driver to pick me up from the aiport, said driver was nowhere to be seen. I had reconfirmed this arrangement just days before - and after a couple of terse phone calls - he arrived 45 mins late. J'Burg airport isn't the most desirable place to be stranded as a visitor. Communications between back office staff are clearly lacking, as mentioned by other reviewers.

That said, the matter was swiftly dealt with the next day by the GM, Nina who was 101% professional and efficient and could not do more to help. She apologised, noted the comms issue (which she was aware of from other issues) and compensated me fairly.

This blip aside, I must say the hotel itself is near perfect. The room I had (room 16) was as big as a suite. Beautifully furnished, spacious with all the things you like - iPod docking, a/c, robes, tea and (real) coffee, terrace and critically for the business traveller free WiFi. I liked the complimentary mineral water supplied and the slightly industrial look to the rooms.

Front staff and other people were helpful, positive and caring.

The bistro served very good breakfast from a well thought out menu (included in the room price). Lunch looked good and they have a small bookable conference room which I would recommend using as it over looks the gardens.

Night staff and security were prevalent and reassuring and the small pool looked inviting even on a Winter summer's day. The location is central, yet quiet. Building works had finished, just some planting in the gardens taking place.

I recommend this hotel highly - a lovely place to stay - just be sure to reconfirm any transport booking on the day you are due to arrive.

The Peech Hotel is a Fantasic Hotel for Business Travellers and visitors alike. I travel at least once a month around the world and stay in boutique hotels. When I travel to Joburg, it is mainly on business and all I feel like at the end of a hectic day seeing customers is to relax and unwind.

Most of the hotel's rooms are situated away from the main building in an elegant garden . Away from any busy roads, the hotel is quite and noise free. I always like to run in the mornings for work and the hotel is in the adjacent building to a large gym (accessed through a side gate), as well as opposite a public park where you can run.

Across the road from the hotel are some small shops including a pharmacy, a cafe, bakery and a deli. What more could u want in close proximity! In terms of food, the hotel has an excellent in-house bistro with brilliant food. Definately not hotel-style food more in-line with the best fine dining food u could ask for. Try the butternut risota and tuna steaks with mash...brilliant.

The rooms are very comfortable with good quality linen, a good powerful shower, very clean and fitted with all necessary hotel accessories such as safe, tv, phone and free internet wifi. The staff are very friendly and service excellent. On my arrival last week, I ordered my dinner at check-in and had it delivered to my room within the quoted 30 minutes.

All in all you feel like you are staying in a stylish-yet comfortable boutique hotel not a mass-packed hotel like the one in the centre of sandton...where I used to stay before I found the Peech. Well done Mr Peech, I really can't fault your establishment.

With the majority of Johannesburg's hotels either stuck in the interior design nightmare of the 1980's or united in their appaling service, The Peech is a breath of fresh air on both accounts.

The rooms are original, comfortable and clean. Ipod docks are standard (assuming the previous guest hadn't stolen it as was the case with my room) and the bathrooms are exceptional - better than those in most five star international hotels. There is a nice sized garden (the building work will soon be over I gather) and it is a good place to sit and have a coffee and watch the hadeedas (a very noisy Ibis).

Service is generally excellent although when the front desk staff are off duty, the back up staff can be a little confused, but in a charming rather than irritating way.

Didn't have dinner, but breakfast was made to order and delicious. Hot toast and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs come highly recommended.

Will use the Peech whenever I am in Johannesburg again.

We stayed here for one night during our honeymoon en route to Cape Town. As the other reviewer mentions, they are adding new rooms so there's quite a bit of building work going on, but this wasn't a problem.

Bistro staff are very friendly and reception staff are helpful but I think there's a lack of communication between them all! We found there to be several different staff members on reception who clearly didn't communicate with each other, and so we had a bit of a kerfuffle with taxi/transport to Sandton for dinner. This was our first time in Joburg and it was at the start of the recent troubles, so I was a little nervous about safety. When the taxi that the hotel had arranged didn't show up to collect us after we'd waited for about half an hour (despite the hotel saying they'd organised their driver to take and collect us), we went to a nearby hotel and asked the doorman there to arrange a car for us. Everything was fine, but I was slighty nervy and a bit miffed with the hotel receptionist, although she was clearly trying to do her best - but it would have been better if she had called us to confirm the taxi was on its way and the name of the driver etc.

The room is a good size and well appointed. Decor is modern but minimalist. The bathroom has molten brown toiletries; when we arrived they had lit candles and already started to run the bath which had been filled with rose petals, which was a sweet touch. Also a very good and powerful shower.

Food in the bistro is excellent and good value.

It suited us well for an overnight stay - and I would say it's a good business hotel and convenient for anyone wanting to do some shopping at Sandton. (Free use of computer in reception was also a bonus.)

  • Liked — Great bathroom
  • Disliked — Hearing the owner reprimanding staff in front of guests - it made us feel awkward
