“Government failure”

How can anybody not be disappointing. You must be mad to even think of going into one of the townships or squatter camps

“'Nothing like I imagined'”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Our trip to Soweto started with a drive around the newer buildings. We then went to the older part and saw the Tin houses people were made to live in during 'apartheid'. This was shocking to see. We stopped off at Regina Mundi church and had a wonderful tour. We also visited Nelson Mandelas' house and had a tour of that.

After we went to the Hector Pieterson memorial and museum. This provides a fascinating insight into the uprising in 1976.

It was nothing like i expected, its like a mini city, with its own universities, KFC standing proudly amongst street vendors, barbers cutting peoples hair on the side of the road....

Unbelievable!

“Tuk Tuk Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

We were originally booked for the Soweto Bicycle Tour through Lebo's Soweto Backpackers, but due to some unexpected health issues ending up taking the Tuk Tuk tour instead. If you're not up to biking, I highly recommend the tuk tuk. We had a great tour, with our wonderful guide Lungi. His knowledge and insight gave us a better understanding of the history of South Africa. We saw the same sights as on the bike tour, including the former migrant workers hostel, the Hector Pierterson memorial, Vilakazi Street, a great buffet lunch with local food. We were in S. Africa for three weeks and the Soweto tuk tuk tour was a highlight of the trip.

“Understand the history!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

As a South African I was very pleased to have taken this trip to SOWETO. This trip brought a greater understanding of the problems South Africa is experiencing as a result of the past.

The Hector Peterson memorial is an eye opener and is very well presented. Mandela's house is a "must do" as well. If you are brave enough there is the bungee jump from the old cooling towers and there are some wonderful traditional restaurants in the area as well.
