We popped into Red Chilli Spice on a rainy Monday night, and were genuinely and pleasant surprised, tucked away as it is at the Colony centre. The decor is contemporary, modern and minimalist. Indian restaurants are serial offenders when it comes to tacky decor, but Red Chilli Spice delivers a fresh atmosphere, uncluttered and elegant in which to enjoy your meal.

The service is exceptional. We were well serviced by both our waiter and the manager, and our drinks were kept fresh, and the food came out promptly. Our waiter was particularly good, managing to be attentive without overbearing, friendly without being obsequious.

The food itself was excellent. We ordered the chicken and vegetable samoosas as a starter, and the paneer korma and lamb korma for our mains, with some excellent naans on the side. The dishes came out quickly, the flavours were bold and intense, and the spiciness was perfectly balanced and contrasted with the butteryness of the naans. It was a supremely well composed curry.

There's a lot of other things to like. The menu is well constructed, with sensible pricing - all the chicken curries, for example, share the same price, which makes selecting your favourite style of curry a decision divorced of economics. The alcohol menu is surprisingly robust, with some sterling local wines and one of the best selections of craft beers in Johannesburg, all offered at very reasonable prices. At the time of writing, they offer a free craft beer for all main meals on Tuesdays, each week serving a different craft beer.

Red Chilli Spice is truly a gem - it's a bit hard to find, but once you have, you'll be very pleased. The prices are fair, the curries are excellent, and they some of the best craft beers in the country. All of this with some excellent service and pleasant decor make Red Chilli Spice absolutely worth the trip.

Highly recommended.

I had a great meal here with my kids - Lamb Roganjosh, Chicken Tikka Marasala and super Dal Makhani and Panheer with good butter and garlic Naan. The restaurant also offers a better wine than most curry houses and some great craft beers. I have to agree with the previous reviewer though - the place is a little sterile and could do with some softening decor wise - this was exacerbated by being quite empty. It is good value and I would highly recommend a visit. I wish the proprietors much luck and every success in the future. I will return for sure.

My wife and I had dinner here recently and are delighted to have found a high quality Indian restaurant in our neighbourhood. The lam rogan josh and the chicken tikka were both excellent, as was the garlic naan bread. It would be nice to be able to add some side dishes of vegetables without having to order another full main course - perhaps this is something they could consider offering.

The wine list offers a variety of options, and the mango lassi was also delicious.

My one criticism would be that the owners should give the place a few loving touches in terms of the decor - it is quite a sparse layout and some more candles, wall hangings, and softer furnishings would go a long way to giving it a slightly more homely feel. I am also not a fan of floor to ceiling tiles as these can make a restaurant very noisy, but I understand that it does make it easy to keep clean.

Overall we had a lovely meal and really enjoyed the excellent food prepared. We hope to visit again soon.

We went to this new Indian eatery the other day and I must say the food is some of the best Indian food I have ever had. The food is complemented by the modern and relaxing surrounds. And as a bonus they stock a selection of craft beers. This restaurant is a must for anyone who likes Indian food.
