We popped into Red Chilli Spice on a rainy Monday night, and were genuinely and pleasant surprised, tucked away as it is at the Colony centre. The decor is contemporary, modern and minimalist. Indian restaurants are serial offenders when it comes to tacky decor, but Red Chilli Spice delivers a fresh atmosphere, uncluttered and elegant in which to enjoy your meal.
The service is exceptional. We were well serviced by both our waiter and the manager, and our drinks were kept fresh, and the food came out promptly. Our waiter was particularly good, managing to be attentive without overbearing, friendly without being obsequious.
The food itself was excellent. We ordered the chicken and vegetable samoosas as a starter, and the paneer korma and lamb korma for our mains, with some excellent naans on the side. The dishes came out quickly, the flavours were bold and intense, and the spiciness was perfectly balanced and contrasted with the butteryness of the naans. It was a supremely well composed curry.
There's a lot of other things to like. The menu is well constructed, with sensible pricing - all the chicken curries, for example, share the same price, which makes selecting your favourite style of curry a decision divorced of economics. The alcohol menu is surprisingly robust, with some sterling local wines and one of the best selections of craft beers in Johannesburg, all offered at very reasonable prices. At the time of writing, they offer a free craft beer for all main meals on Tuesdays, each week serving a different craft beer.
Red Chilli Spice is truly a gem - it's a bit hard to find, but once you have, you'll be very pleased. The prices are fair, the curries are excellent, and they some of the best craft beers in the country. All of this with some excellent service and pleasant decor make Red Chilli Spice absolutely worth the trip.
