After hearing a lot about Pronto, finally made our way to this neighborhood eatery for a Sunday lunch. Food choices were good, with options venturing across the Italian culinary landscape. This might be appealing for some, but choices ranging into multiple dozens could lead to a lack of focus. Perhaps a more discerning and specialised approach would allow Pronto to differentiate itself from every other JHB based Italian eatery, attempting to be everything to everyone?

Quality of ingredients was however evident, and food was well presented and tasty. Pasta portions were also rational, not subscribing to the "more is more" trapping. Wine list was good, with a compact Italian selection.

Unfortunately the service on the day was poor, with waiters seemingly stretched too thin, and managers not active enough. Bread arrived at the same time as starters. White wine arrived at optimum serving temperature, but had to sit on the table for 15 mins in the summer heat before an ice bucket surfaced (after asking three times). Finished meal plates stared back at us for ages. At one point, a fellow patron got up to find someone to bring her the bill, as all staff seemed to have vacated the outside area.

So much potential, but needs work. Will give it some time before going back.

We are regular visitors with family and friends. This has to be one of the best restaurants in JHB. The food is a combination of classic simple Italian dishes, and some with a twist of modern.

Over the years we have been going there, almost monthly, have worked our way through the whole menu and never had a bad meal. Personally i'd probably rarely pick a pizza, and would rather select a pasta or a polenta dish.

If the porcini mushrooms are available, don't skip them, superb as a starter or main. The courgette strips and the cold meat platter are also firm favourites in the starter section. Mains, the creamy polenta dishes are out of this world (be hungry though) and the pasta's are excellent. The basil chicken pesto with cream is always a winner.

Some great local wines, as well as selected Italian wines are on offer. Meals and drinks are reasonably priced and have always thought good value for money.

Restaurant is always full and has a lively and pleasant buzz, seems to attract the right crowd. Staff are well trained, friendly, and professional.

You need to book!

The restaurant has had a much needed facelift and appears much more modern and airy. The food is good but the chef has a heavy hand with butter, lending an unnecessary richness to the food. The pasta with arrabiata sauce was tasty, but veered towards a duro side of al dente and the dish was swimming in sauce, which would not be acceptable in Italy. The waiters were curiously disengaged and appeared to be suffering a collective migraine. Management sorely needs to up their game for the restaurant to yield its potential.
