“Number 1 by Far - Very Far”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

My wife and i saw some positive reviews and thought we would try this one out. We were surprised to see there were so few tables. When i saw the prices i thought that i was about to get ripped off, but far from it. It really is worth every cent. I am sure this place will be rated 1 in Johannesburg on trip advisor before long, and South Africa very soon.

This place is beyond anything that i could have imagined. Every little touch point is great, from the butter for the home made bread to the cleaning of the tables to the menus, they take your jacket and keep it for you, they give the ladies a box to rest their bags on. The food is great, every course was amazing, like a master class in masterchef. I have been to some great places, but this is above and beyond. You just cant compare anything to this place. Every course is unique and original to 500.

The wine list is amazing and Francis did a great job of the wine pairing. In fact you can see in every part of this restuarant that it is run by people who are very passionate about what they do, I must congratulate everyone involved!!

The staff were very friendly and humourous and connected with us. I can recommend this place if you can afford it.

I see poppys_dad rated this place the same as a take away place. Definitely going to be trying out that take away if its on the same level as this, but somehow i doubt it :)

“Expensive, only really for special occasions”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

For me, the main winner for Five Hundred is the location and service. It is definately a place for special occasions given how beautiful the hotel is and how intimate the restaurant feels. That said, you certainly pay for it! Our tasting meal for two (including tip) was R2,800, and only my wife was drinking!
In terms of food, there were some very good combinations and well presented dishes. I perhaps wasn't blown away like some of the other reviewers as I still don't think this reaches the heights of the Western Cape's finest places (Kitchen @Maison being the prime example). I also remain to be convinced about cooking by sous vide, which seemed to be the method of choice for cooking meat here. It seems that this is more a tool for reducing the time taken to prepare a dish during service rather than something that imparts flavour.
Some of the wines in the wine parings seemed good and the somelier was very knowledgeable. A small grumble would be that most of the wines were imported, not something that I see as being necessary given the array of wines available in South Africa.
Finally, a special mention for the maitre d' (didn't catch his name). We asked him about the provenance of the (superb) fois gras. Not only could he talk at length about where it was sourced from (Canada), but how it was cooked and why. I got the impression that he could have talked equally knowledgably about any of the ingredients that were used. We were very impressed and he is a really credit to the team.

“Five Hundred has it all!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Prepare yourself for a gourmand’s delight at at Five Hundred where dining becomes an experience!

The experience begins with the staff that is passionate about what happens at Five Hundred and ensures the whole dining experience meets the patron’s needs – everything arrives seamlessly and is precisely timed for a fantastic presentation.

If you are open-minded and adventurous, you will relish this creative spot where a changing palette of only the freshest and purest of local ingredients informs a choice of a 4 or 6 course menu.

The menu gets constructed by chef David Higgs who uses unique, innovative, unlikely combinations that worked perfectly every time. The service was professional, very attentive and friendly but not intrusive - the chefs interact with the guests which adds a nice touch to the service.

Overlooking the Saxon’s peaceful garden and the evening skyline, Five Hundred to me, offers the best there is!

“Culinary innovation in Sandton”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

Had a tasting menu with the family here. It's great to see restaurants such as five hundred coming up in Joburg, the food was beautifully presented and full of subtle flavours and textures. What really made the meal stand out was the wine pairings, which included outstanding wine from vineyards that I had never even heard of! The sommelier is seriously keeping up with the chefs here!

“Blown Away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012

We were the chef's first Chef's table. It felt like the well-oiled machine had been running for years. David Higgs and his team were delightful. Book this restaurant now! It is truly world- class. The Michelin guide should come and take a turn here.
