This was a very strange experience in that I had heard so many good things about Licorice but it fell horribly short. First up the tables are just to close, we had people jammed in on three sides and chair jousting was the order of the day.
We had to ask for napkins only to be told that there were only paper ones, a short while later during our starters the table that arrived next to us got their napkins and the bread which we were not offered which raised the irritation levels.
The starters were good but I found the steak so over salted (i think they brine them) that I could not finish it (ate only about a quarter). I told the waiter and sent it back uneaten but heard nothing further.
I think they are trying to fit too many people in here and have lost the plot. Service was shocking and our R1200 meal for two will not be repeated at this spot.

We had a most memorable dinner here.
If you want to have some fantastic South African food with many modern twists, you should book in here.

Be warned booking are essential, I had to use all the tricks in the book to get in here.

Chef / Owner Jacques Fourie is a very talented young man and very easy on the eye for the ladies.
Staff are helpful, polite and know their stuff.
Excellent wine selection and make sure you try their cocktails.

The food was excellent as usual although they didn't have our booking when we arrived due to a new booking system but good for them they made a plan. Service was attentive but not overbearing and they put together a wonderful cheese platter for the table for desert. A nice touch was the featured wine estate on the evening with the rep available to give information on the wines. Compared to some of the other overpriced average food venues in Bryanston Licorish is a cut above. Well done.

Some excellent dishes and a good wine list. When it opened the menu was a little edgier, and seems to have been dumbed down a little since. Where has all the licorice gone?

Don't necessarily be rushed into the tasting plates, though they are good, especially the lamb and fish plates. Some of their elements are best taken as main courses.

Execution is competent, service is good and I suppose the main detraction is the annoying Joburg habit of building restaurants facing onto parking lots rather than views.

We visited Licorish recently and next time we are in Johannesburg this is the first restaurant we will eat at. Service was excellent and very accommodating. Drinks were delicious and I cannot say enough about the food. Our party of four each decided on the 4 different tasting plates so that we could all try a bit. A great idea - there was a fish, game, lamb and beef tasting plate with 3 different preparations of each food. Delicious. We started with the Mussels in a curry sauce - OMG - they were heaven. We shared the desert of the chocolate spring rolls. Again - heavenly.
