Description: The original Back o' the Moon was a famous shebeen in the historic Sophiatown of the 1950's. It was a special place where rich and poor, the elite and the ordinary folk alike would meet in their Sunday best and enjoy music and great food. Some of the early legends of the South African music scene plied their trade at the Back o' the Moon. Back o' the Moon was immortalised by Miriam Makeba in the late 50's stage play,King Kong in which she sang the song Back o' the Moon - a tribute to the rich history of Sophiatown of the late 50's. Today, our own Back o' the Moon is a feast for the senses. It is the complete dining experience, offering an exquisite menu, impeccable service and great entertainment in a lavish and contemporary environment. Sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

I had lunch at the restaurant.
The food was unseasoned and tasteless. The speciality steak I ordered bore no resemblance to what was reflected on the menu. My guests were also disappointed with their food - all tasteless.

We booked our company function at this restaurant 5 months ago for 18 people. When we arrived they gave us two separate tables. This is unacceptable as we booked months before and we are a group so how could they split us up. They didn't put our table where we had booked because they had a larger function booked after ours and we were pushed aside. Eventually after about half an hour of discussions with the manager who didn't seem to care they gave us a table in a different room. They should have told us that they would split us when they confirmed the week before but they didn't. Anyway the food was mediocre, not nearly as good as we have had there a few years previously, I am not sure if it is under new management but we would never go back, all our food was not great and they messed up the orders so we only got served our dinner at 11.30pm. There was no compensation for the mess up and we couldn't all eat together. If they cannot manage such a large table they shouldn't take the booking as our year end Christmas function was ruined by the bad food and service and them splitting up our table, imagine booking a table for even say 6 people and you get there and they split you into two groups. This is unacceptable and the food is very expensive and not worth it. Avoid the seafood at all costs cause all 14 of our seafood platters were fishy and mushy. Rather stay away there are much nicer restaurants around especially at those high prices

We ate at Back o' the Moon on 7 September and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.

The musicians who played soft jazz tunes while we ate were talented, professional and had bags of personality, but they were also careful not to be intrusive. There is a dance floor in front of the stage and it gets good use throughout the evening.

The starters and mains were very good. I'd recommend the shrimp cocktail (mine came with prawns instead of shrimps) and the beef ribs, which my husband had as a main course. Unfortunately the desserts weren't fantastic. The cheesecake was fine, but we sent back the creme brulee as it was extremely lumpy.

The manager was very polite and apologetic and offered us a different dessert on the house, which we declined. We were not charged for the brulee.

The manager and all the staff were incredibly efficient and helpful, and our waiter actually got quite upset that we hadn't enjoyed the brulee - as though he were disappointed on our behalf! We assured him that everything else had been spectacular.

I would definitely recommedn Back o' the Moon. There are not many Johannesburg restaurants that offer exquisite live music, a dance floor and very good food, and we enjoyed doing something a bit different for the night.

My wife and I visited Back o' the moon and were very pleasantly surprised. The service was very good and welcoming. Food was excellent with diverse menu. The atmosphere was exceptional, and the band really made our evening. Will happily go back there!!
Pros - Jazz band make it a bit more special than most places. Food quality.
Cons - Maybe a bit expensive, theres no real "cheap option". Service although friendly could maybe be a bit quicker!
