We didn't expect this museum to be so large, and spent 4-5 hours here. It is very informative and detailed regarding the details of so many years of the apartheid regime. Take a snack and eat it in the courtyard at the halfway point, you will need it. Probably not a place to bring children, wouldn't be very interesting for them to see or understand.

Hadn't enough time. Give yourself at least 4 hours. Very emotional and extremely well laid out. Worth visiting.

One day is not enough to go through every corner of this museum in great detail. No pictures allowed. Allot 3-5 hrs.

A special section is allotted for Nelson Mandela. The second section is about the timeline, personalities, event, etc associated with the Apartheid. While city tour guides can brief you about the origins, history and social implications of Apartheid, a visit to this museum is just about what a tourist needs to encapsulate the system that shaped South Africa. The visit is a very powerful experience and touching tribute on humanity.

As far as museums go, there are very few that are as thought-provoking as the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. The museum is a look into the not so distant past of a segregated South Africa and it's crazy to think that to this day there are still remnants of those times.

It's really hard to describe how meaningful a trip to the museum can be. Not only is it educational, it is moving and powerful. It offers not only facts about apartheid, but also makes sure to paint a bright future for the country. Quotes from Mandela and certain interactive exhibits make you really think about our world and how we behave towards our fellow humans.

From the moment you are issued your ticket you are taught a lesson on segregation. Your ticket either reads "white" or "non-white", and you enter through the appropriate gate. Sure, it's a bit gimmicky, but staring at your friends through metal bars as they scan through images of a segregated South Africa really makes you wonder how it must feel to have lived during those times. The museum will definitely leave a lasting impression on you long after you've left.

A trip to Johannesburg would not be complete without a visit to the Apartheid museum. I highly recommend it!
