If you want the best views of central Johannesburg, this is the place to go.
A little tricky to find the entrance point which is in the shopping area below. I asked in a shop, the people were very friendly and helpful. The cost was 15 rand. A lift takes you to the top floor. There are black & white photographs on the walls of johannesburg of old & also photos of the construction of the building.
There is a cafe at the top for meals and drinks. I spoke to the manager there who is pushing for the cafe to be refurbished as its in need of modernising but its fine. He was very passionate about the carlton building, it was a pleasure to talk with him.
Whilst I was there, a storm came in from the direction of the airport. It was stunning to watch.
It felt very safe to me in the building and indeed on the street. I would be careful after dark though as Johannesburg is maybe more dangerous than most big cities at the moment.
I am white and 48 years old. Enjoy the views.
