The Carlton has gone downhill overthe last 20-25 years. Admittedly, there have been efforts to renovate and spruce it up a bit, but the fact remains that it is in mid-Johannesburg and the area has become rather seedy and dangerous. As such, it does not attract the crowds it used to and the really high-end shops have all departed for Sandton.

I felt treatend all the time whils walking around the centre and it is a far cry from what it used to be. Many years ago it used to be very classy...not any more.

A group of friends were visiting from the UK so I took the opportunity to go with them up the tallest building in Africa. I must say that at R15 per person it was relatively cheap. At the top the view is stunning but the building and mall underneath it were very rundown and didn't feel safe at all. The viewing deck looked like at hadn't been cleaned in quite a while and there were certainly quite a few noticeable repairs required. It seem such a pity that a landmark such as this hasn't been preserved for future generations.

Used to go to the top of the centre to look at Johannesburg 360 degrees, but this is very run down now. The centre itself has gone down over the years and since the hotel was closed.

This was probably a wonderful mall when it was the only one in Johannesburg, but now (considering the location), there is nothing worth risking your safety in this mall that you can't find in one of the bigger, more beautiful and safer malls in the surrounding suburbs.
