We used to go to Melville a lot but it has gone down and all the great places have disappeared, pity, there was a lot of nice unusual shops which were interesting.

we lived in melville for a while and loved the vibe of the "high street". though we no longer live there we always loved to take a walk there, enjoy the restaurants, little shops and bookshops.
we visited the other day and were saddened by how run down and tacky it seems. maybe it's the after-effects of a rough Saturday night - as I believe the place still rocks at night. but the streets were dirty, there were many empty shops and the whole vibe smacked of desperation to us.
maybe we're just too old now to see the attraction! either way, some people love it, others are disappointed. I think if you're looking for a good night out, it's great. but not a family destination.

Once, there were bars, clubs, shops, bakeries and the like to go to. People flocked to this suburb and house prices went sky-high. Actors, artists and the very trendy socialites bought up property after property. Those days are sadly gone. A lot of shops are empty, beggars and tramps accost you on every street and it now has a reputation for high drug trafficking. House prices have fallen and they have been inhabited by people from somewhere else in Africa, who are well known for their dealing with drugs and other illegal activities. Parking your car is also a risk, as a number of impromptu car guards storm at you, each demanding that you pay them upfront, else they "cannot guarantee the safety of your vehicle". We will not be back.

Melville is a funky little suburb of Johannesburg, with some great Guest Houses and loads of fun restaurants. A nice vibe alround. Well situated for traveling around the city.
