African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel

Spent one night at the Melrose Arch hotel on a stopover in Joburg. The hotel's design is very contemporary but with nice African touches. It is in a gated community, which did have a bit of an artificial feel I must admit, but with what I've been hearing about Joburg, perhaps that's an advantage. Within the gated community of Melrose Arch though, there are some very nice looking restaurants and cafes, a couple of banks and a few different shops. You won't have any other options but to get the hotel to call cabs for you if you want to leave this gated community, and cabs are quite pricy. I recommend hiring a car with GPS when you arrive at the airport to save money and have more freedom and flexibility.

The room I had was nothing short of stunning. I might even go so far as to say that this is the most impressive standard room I have seen in any hotel. Plush furnishing combined with industrial cool in an unconventional yet functional room layout, packed with all the amenities you need and more! The design of the room was so well thought out, it's hard not to be impressed. They've got every minute detail down, even to the different genres of movies on DVDs in the pull out drawer underneath the TV (OK, they weren't all good movies, but to think that every single room has DVDs from 5 genres is pretty impressive.) Internet is fast and free of charge, minibar is very well stocked, and all the cupboards and storage are nicely lined as panels on one side of the room (the safe behind the painting frame is neat!). Also loved the bathtub that is almost in the bedroom area rather than the bathroom area, which is perfect for watching a movie while taking a hot bubble bath.

Tried the room service for dinner and the food was hot and nicely presented when it came to the room. Even the room service menu was excellent and full of great sounding dishes. The real stunner here is the breakfast though. This is by far the best breakfast I've seen in any hotel. Oysters, caviar, champagne are additions to the usual items, which has so much more variety than other hotels. Anything that is cooked is done to perfection. Amazing.

The only thing that was a bit of a bump in my stay was the tour to Soweto I'd arranged with the hotel. This is not the hotel's fault, but I was the only person taking the tour that day, and at one point in the tour I was dropped off in the slum by the tour reps on my own and was taken around the slum with a "local guide" who pretty much extorted money from me at the end of the tour.

Not sure if I would return to Joburg as I was not particularly impressed. However, if anyone is going, The Melrose Arch is highly recommended.

Melrose Arch Hotel is situated in a pleasant gated complex so it is safe to walk around outside the hotel. We stayed three nights and went on two guided tours, which gave us a good taste of Johannesburg. One day we were driven into central Jo'burg (where you wouldn't want to go on your own) and to the Apartheid Museum. The second day we visited Soweto. Both trips worth doing. In the complex there are several restaurants so you have where to go in the evening. We ate in the Meat Co. which was very good - best T-bone steak I have ever had, and that includes the States. The hotel itself is beautifully designed. A sort of retro style but without sacrificing functionality. The rooms are spacious, well designed and beautifully lit, and the bathroom is also very attractive. The service is very good. Our guide was late one afternoon and the lady at the Reception desk did everything she could to locate him, even phoning the tour guide's head office in Cape Town. The breakfast was very good, as was the bar.

We used this as a stopover to recover from our flight before going on to safari and the hotel was admirably suited for this. A longer stay would be fine too.

It is situated in a semi pedestrianised area with a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops.

Our room was very spacious and brilliantly designed. It had a large, comfortable bed, enormous bathroom and a sense of humour – rubber ducks, M&Ms and the safe hidden behind a picture of a safe cracker!!

The common areas were no less appealing. We particularly liked the Library Bar which had a gentleman’s club feel with huge sofas that spill out to the outside. The pool is quirky too.

All in all a great experience and really good value for money.

I've stayed here several times - it's definitely my favourite hotel in jo'burg. It's in a gated development on a square with several restaurants. It's a very contemporary hotel - great rooms. Given it's location, you can pop out and visit the bars and restaurants in the square.

Service is a bit hit and miss - i've never had a great check-in or breakfast experience. But a great hotel and a safe location.

I've stayed at Melrose Arch a couple of times and definitely recommend it. I've been lucky enough to get poolside rooms on the ground floor both times -- thanks to upgrades from staff. Rooms are large, comfortable and clean.

Checkin and door staff are great. Restaurant and bar staff are good. Travel staff is terrible.

Pool could be cleaner, but otherwise facilities are good. The poolside food is good, but room service is too bizarre. If you're staying in your hotel room, you want comfort food. They're trying to be too eclectic.

Melrose Arch location is great --other restaurants and cafe so you can leave the hotel safely. Virgin gym is also excellent though pricey.

Stayed here recently and found it to be an interesting place with plenty of character, but something missing. Everything worked but you don't really feel like you are in Africa (the hotel and surrounds felt more like Brisbane to me!) and it isn't quite in the top end luxury space it thinks it is. However it was a good place to stay and has some nice touches (sound room to watch movies, nice library/bar) and was in a good location for restaurants and bars (and felt safe).

The bar and restaurant staff were very good, as was breakfast, but the other staff were very mixed and the room service was average in terms of variety and quality.

The centrepiece is clearly the pool bar - which was different and nicely done.

Overall it was a good place to stay and reasonable value for money if you are coming from overseas, but expensive for Africa.

The Melrose Arch is a very well situated hotel for all that Johannesburg has to offer - which is not a great amount.

You can walk to various bars and restaurants in the Melrose Arch development, which was perhaps the greatest attraction for us on our first visit to Jo'burg, but third visit to SA. Being able to walk out of the hotel in complete safety, rather than having to eat in the hotel restaurant every night (or perhaps brave the Jo'burg highways after dark) was a huge plus. The restaurants in the development e.g. Moyo, Meat Co are all very good.

However the problem with the hotel is the standard of service to its guests. As far as we could see it, the service was literally non-existent, and rather pedestrian. On one night in the March restaurant in the hotel, we were at one point the only diners. Despite this, the service was so slow it almost stopped.

Compared to the superb and slick service we have always experienced in and around Cape Town, the Melrose Arch did not really tick enough boxes for us. There was no interest displayed in the guests from the staff or management, no warm welcome upon arrival back at the hotel, and no request for guest feedback/comments on departure.

The most bizarre thing was being woken up at 7am by a knock at the door from the laundry lady asking if we had any - laundry. This was despite the fact that we had not asked for any laundry to be taken, as evidenced by the absence of a "please take laundry" sign outside our door.

All in all, the Melrose scores for location and facilities, but for little else.
