“A great boutique hotel in Melrose Arch”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

I've used this hotel on quite a few occasions and most likely to use it on several more. The location is great and some really good restaurants just across the road - one is spoilt for choice. The Orient, which serves pan-Asian cuisine is by far one of the best places I have sampled eastern cuisine in. Moyo, the African restaurant is pretty good too.

Rooms are very nice and roomy. The bath tub almost in the room was a bit disconcerting at first, but one gets used to it soon enough.

The bar is lovely and offers a great selection of drinks. Service at the bar is pretty good too. Menu choices are a bit restricted, especially for a vegetarian. But with the choice of restaurants nearby, it does not matter too much.

Overall, the Melrose Arch precinct is great, but about a quarter the size of Sandton. One tends to outgrow the place fairly quickly if one is a regular visitor or plans to stay for a long time.

Dear MiiTMO
Thanks for your amazing feedback and for staying with us while in JHB!
I am sure you will enjoy the new extended vegetarian options we have recently added to our Library Bar menu, our March Restaurant has also just won best dish of 2012, at the Taste of Johannesburg.
The Hotel and Melrose Arch precinct has a myriad of activities to offer, from business to leisure - should you wish to travel through to Sandton, we also have a courtesy shuttle Monday’s through Friday’s.
Look forward to your next visit!
Best regards

Travelling to Johannesburg for business is fast becoming a regular thing, and having to do all my events around the Melrose Arch area, decided it would be best to stay nearby, and chose the African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel. The location is perfect in terms of surrounding restaurants, and business centres, and even as a leisure stay, you would be very comfortable. We were very well looked after, and even accommodated with an extra late check-out due to our evening flight back home. They are very busy during the week, so I realise that this was a large request, but that made all the difference to our very busy schedule. The staff didn't know about the Gautrain feeder services at all though. I realise that most of their visitors usually use chauffeurs when staying at the hotel, but were unable to assist with a taxi or shuttle to the Gautrain stations, and couldn't assist with showing us where the feeder service stops were either. It could make a big difference just to be knowledgeable about public transportation, even if it's not needed often. We were helped with a GM transfer to the station when we were running late due to the 'free" shuttles not arriving when we were advised it would, and managed to just make our flight home, but the stress could have been avoided a little if we were informed correctly earlier in the day when we asked for assistance at the front desk and concierge.
The rooms are lovely and spacious. The Duckies are a great touch in the bathrooms.. made me feel very at home.. Home sick for my son in fact, but had a great rest, and hope to return there again next month on my next visit!!

Unique rooms. Good for a short stay. Staff is mixed. Some are extra nice, some don't care a hoot about you and will do the bare minimum after you beg. My husband asked for a map 3 times before the concierge lady decided to hand him one and proceeded to chat on the phone like he never existed. Neighborhood is very scene driven. It's convenient to have stores nearby, but it's still too early in its developmental stages to have real depth. The food is OK. Very touristy and normal. Would do much better with some diverse ethnic fare.

Also, my bath robe had make-up on the collar. CLEAN EVERYTHING BEFORE THE NEW GUEST ARRIVES PLEASE!!!

I've used this hotel on several occasions and I'll use it on several more. I just love staying here to me it is very near perfect. There are some wonderful restaurants with-in 5 minutes walking, then after an excellant meal, wonder back and have a night cap or two sitting on the stoop and watch the world go by....

Being right in the centre of Melrose Arch, this property is great for those who want this location.

The hotel itself is funky and modern with all the finishings you'd expect of a world class hotel. Rooms are on the small side, but clean and with plenty of amenities. The public areas are comfortable and plentiful, including the pool area which is lovely, with cabanas and hammocks.

On the down side, breakfast is kind of average, especially when you consider the room rates, and the service is patchy. I got significant attitude at check-in, to the point of being offended, and I am fairly easy going. Also breakfast service was not great with dirty dishes being left on vacated tables and cutlery and napkins missing from our table and others. Also lots of dishes on the breakfast buffet were empty even though it was only halfway through service and there weren't that many people eating.

I've heard others say fantastic things about this hotel, so maybe it was just a glitch. Other people in the hotel were great, the doorman could not have been more accommodating, the turn-down lady was very nice, bar man very nice, so maybe it's just a few bad apples.

All in all I think this is a good business hotel for those looking for an international standard large hotel in a handy location.

We spent months planning a big arrival with a group from the USA. The management and staff of Melrose Arch helped in all aspects they could. I have to particularly commend Sibusiso the General Manager, who gets involved in the simple and complex aspects of the group bookings.

For a discerning businessman looking for a perfect balance between work and leisure, the African Pride Melrose Arch is just the tonic. Over the years the hotel's outstanding, discreet, personal service has made it easier for me to use it as the meeting place of choice in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. At the slightest of excuses, I also use the hotel for leisure - what with their legendary breakfast offerings! The kids always love the treat.
