Description: The flagship of the Thai Africa Group is undoubtedly Wangthai Sandton which overlooks the prestigious Nelson Mandela Square. The most authentic Thai restaurant outside of Thailand. Wangthai Sandtonalso serves the DIY dining experience: sensational Thai Suki Hot Pot. A culinary concept which dates back over 1 000 years in Asian history, Thai Suki Hot Pot today - continues to tantalise the pallet and tease the senses with its fragrant oriental flavours. Best enjoyed as a group affair; the Thai Suki Hot Pot sees an aromatic broth, brimming with flavourful Eastern ingredients, placed in a pot, and atop an induction stove - within the centre of the table. This simmers away throughout the evening, while guests gentle poach their favourite selection of fresh ingredients. There is very little effort involved, other than to indulge, at leisure, in the refreshingly light tastes of Thailand. Wangthai, invites both businessmen and women, as well as the social sect, to sample this ancient cooking tradition, to which it has added a unique measure of contemporary stylishness.

In Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton immediately behind the big statue of Mandela. A charming, modern restaurant with great Thai food. Went with friends for lunch - their favourite spot. Not crowded (at that time of day anyway). Good service, very reasonable cost. Careful - some curries can be hot!

I can't believe anyone would say this is authentic Thai. Fish cakes were made with canned fish (or just terrible fish). Thom Thai gai was ok. Phad ki Mao used the wrong noodles and only tasted of chilli, with 1 green bean and lots of capsicum. We decided to try a different type of dish, sizzling seafood in a Thai peanut sauce. The seafood was covered in a sweet peanut butter based sauce. It was awful and a really wrong combination. If this is the best Thai on offer here, then I feel sorry for the locals.

Excellent food, which I enjoyed both times. My colleague who also had two different dishes both times was very impressed. The service was a little slow but very friendly and helpful. Be warned that hot means HOT! so be careful when ordering. My favourite dishes were the Phad Gra Phao Gai and chicken with cashew nuts served medium (which was about as hot as any medium dish from Marks and Spencer's). Nice atmosphere both at lunch and dinner. Very good price vs UK (1 GBP = ZAR 18). Example of menu = sparking water R18, Vegetable samosa R45, Green Salad R55, Phad Gra Phao Gai R92, Khao Suey (rice) R22.

Prompted by reviews in social media and our love for the cuisine, visited the restaurant in course of our ecent trip to Joburg. The ambience is electric with beautiful view of teh Nelson Mandela Square and buzz around. Service is indifferent however teh waitress did claculate teh gratuity of 10% and added that on to teh bill.. I have never been to a Thai restaurant that did not serve lemongrass and thai eggplant in green curry. Food was flavourless and tasted slightly creamy. The presentation and portion size was generous. Extremely unsatisfactory

We went on a late Friday afternoon and had starters and mains with a bottle of wine. We asked for the food to be served "thai spicy" and were not dissappointed! We have lived in Asia and spent a lot of time in Thailand and found the food to be very authentic - and they were not afraid to make it as spicy as we wanted (i.e. as spicy as you would get it in Thailand). We both enjoyed it immensely and our waiter displayed excellent knowledge of the menu and was able to advise on ingredients etc. Best Their we've had in Africa. Besides, it's a great spot for people watching. Make sure you are sitting on the balcony with a view of the square. Enjoy!
