This restaurant has a really nice setting if you can sit under the olive trees on a warm Johannesburg day. I enjoy having a pizza here, I haven't head a steak but people that I have been with really enjoyed them.

Overall very good, and worth going back to, to try something different on the menu.

It appears that the service problems of the past are resolved, which greatly contributed to a lovely early dinner. Sitting in the courtyard under the trees during summer is a great way to escape the usual mall-bound fare in Jhb.

We had 3 pizzas - all of which were good to excellent. Be warned though that NO children's portions are available, which means R85 for a portion of spagbol for a five year-old.

Recommended.

The weather in Johannesburg was beautiful today! We had a booking for two and were seated at an elegantly laid table in the courtyard near a little pond. The service was slick and the drinks were brought promptly. The order was taken and served within a reasonable length of time for a beatifully cooked meal. My pork knuckles were appetizing and and served with sweet potatoes, parsnips and other vegetables as promised. My friend's crumbed chicken breasts were moist and equally delicious and tender. The courtyard was a hub of activity but peaceful at the same time. The other dishes on the menu were very tempting and we would certainly pay this delightful restaurant another visit in 2013. They are closed over the festive season.Good value for money too.

Ok so, this last Sunday we were hoping for my favourite music, lunch and friends day but instead had the lunch and great friends but instead of Ensemble Borsalino, formed in April, calls itself a boer/Jew/Gypsy band and that has taken Johannesburg by store we had a super 6 piece band with a double base player that looked like he was in heaven from Runaway Train Cult which entertained us 100%.

Still prefer the others though which draws creatively from the heady mix of complicatedly related music genres - from Gypsy manouche to klezmer (Jewish jazz), swing and boeremusiek to tango - and it will make you want to gyrate off your chair thanks to crazy band meader Rian Malan.

So does the restaurant deliver - well Sunday it did and Brian and Greta Green, the owners of Il Giardino Degli Ulivi, have actually made this place an awesome place.

The bruschetta were awesome, pizzas tasty and dough just right (Not always like that), pastas super only the wine list is heavy on the pocket so took my own and had a heft R 70 corkage fee - and with the price of R 75 a bottle that I paid it was still cheaper than the wines on the menu - though they have a great selection. A R 30 corkage is great and we still will spend at their restaurant and venue.

But I do love the vibe, the place and Greta's energy is really good. We also love the openess of the waiters and servers and all.

What a super venue and one of a kind.
