“One of the best Chinese restaurant in Johannesburg”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

The restaurant is situated close to Eastgate in Johannesburg.
It is situated in an area in Bruma/ Cirildene called "China Town"
Do not expect luxury surroundings or upmarket tables and chairs etc., but do expect some of the best Chinese food you have tasted.
This is not a fast food restaurant as all dishes are prepared fresh. It is definitely worth the wait
The restaurant is owned by Savi, who runs the front of house, and her husband who is the amazing chef.
An added plus is that, although, they do keep a basic selection of wines, you can take your own.

“Depends on what you are looking for”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

Having read great reviews on TA about this restaurant, i decided to check it out with a few friends. Its definitely a no-frill eatery and is just a large room with tables and chairs. So if you are looking for fancy dining, this is not the place!

We ordered 2 soups ( each bowl is large enough to be shared between 3 or 4 people). The chicken sweet corn soup was ok...with a lttle too much salt for us. The other was a pork soup...forget the name...that was quite good. Also orded chicken sping rolls - nothing to write home about.

For mains, we had the three cup chicken (over rated). The prawn with cashewnuts was really good while anoth chicken with dry red chillis was ok too. The pork friedrice was good while the pork noodles were ok. Howeverr, after the meal we were told that the crabs at this place are very good. So we couldnt try those.

Overall, it was an average experience. Since i come from Asia, i have eaten better elsewhere

“Delicious”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

Plastic chairs and tables, no decor, menu's in plastic CNA binder folders and delicious food with friendly service and management always available.

This is the restaurant where I discovered "Three cup chicken" recipe at the bottom of the page. I have searched for this dish done better at other Chinese restaurant’s but failed. The chef is quiet willing to share his ideas on this and his other recipes with you. Their crab curry is the best in town. Don't come dressed in your finest. It's messy, hard work, worth it!

We had:
3 Cup chicken - 10/10
Sweet chilli calamari - once you get over the texture of the calamari, its not too bad. The tentacles are delicious and the sauce is great.
Ma-po's bean curd with pork mince - This is a surprise that has changed my view of tofu.

Reasonable prices - they accept credit cards.

Most of the patrons are Chinese. Buy their home made sauces.

This is on my top 10 list.

The 3 cup chicken recipe from the Fisherman's plate has a few attributes that differentiate it from other recipes / restaurants. These include: Less sesame oil than the original recipe, fresh basil leaves (whole), thighs and wings only, more chilli, whole garlic cloves and sliced ginger.

“Dreadful experience”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

We booked the Fishermans plate for Chinese New year 2013. Paid for our food in advance as they would not serve you if not paid. Waited 3 hours for first course, 2 hours later under threat got the second course and that was it for a ten course dinner. our one table (of two) did not receive any food at all. Upon requesting a refund this was declined but offered vouchers for uneaten courses. This was actually not good enough, and went back and requested a refund as the whole experience there left a bitter taste. All we got was half our money back and the three who received no food were not recompensed.
The restaurant on day kept adding tables and could clearly not cope with the number of guests but were acting out of pure greed!. never going back there!

“Excellent food”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

This is an excellent choice if you are visiting the Cyrildene Chinatown. Prices are reasonable, and the quality and diversity of food are great.
