“Lovely outing with the family”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

A bit expensive if taking the whole famly, but the kids loved the trip.
Good for a stop at Sandton City or Rosebank.
Did movies with the kids and had lunch at one of the "street cafes" at the Rosebank station.
Also nice on Sundays to visit the flea market.

“When's an express train not really express...?”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

The Gautrain is a modern, fast and efficient train service from Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport to Sandton and other parts of Johannesburg. It’s cost-effective and easy to use, but not without some “issues”. The service schedule varies, but when I’m on it (weekends, early morning) it seems to be every half hour – which is a long time to wait for a train. And if you’re not getting off (or on) at Sandton, you can expect a long wait for your connection. As an example – turn up at Rosebank without knowing the schedule (their website isn’t easy to use) and wait 20 minutes for the train to Sandton to leave. Ride the train for less than 5 minutes, get off and change onto the train for the airport, and sit another 20 minutes there before it leaves. If you’ve got plenty of time, and know this limitation, then that’s fine, but don’t think this is a regular, express service that will get you from anywhere in Jo’burg to the airport in 30 minutes or so – it’s just not like that. Allow an hour or more.

And the waiting a connection is such that last week I just got off at Sandton and got a taxi to Rosebank to save the 20 minute wait. But the taxis that run to and from the Gautrain stations are very expensive – I didn’t ask up front and ended up paying R150 (£12) to get from Sandton to Rosebank – for less than 10 minutes. That’s the price of a good meal with wine in Jo’burg, and more than the cost of an Airport-Rosebank Gautrain ticket!

Safe, fast and cheap - what more do you want? The Gautrain always delivers on time and spotlessly clean.

The train and stations are clean, on time and very strict (cant eat or chew gum on the trains) and so easy to get to the airport!

“First World Experience”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

I longed for my days in England, and all that is missing is "Mind the Gap" when the doors of the train open. A lovely experience - luxury and efficiency on our own doorstep. All the staff where friendly and helpful, and I am proud of this development.
