I find the Gautrain very pleasant and clean. There is hardly any noise and the journeys are so quick. Only the walking from the train to your car is long!!

Runs on time, fast, convenient. Gettingt o OR Tambo Airport is a breeze. The bus routes on the Pretoria side have been convenient for me - maybe not everyone though.

I took the Gautrain from O.R. Tambo Airport to Pretoria and back while traveling in Gauteng as a tourist, with multiple bags. Everything about the journey was fast, smooth, and easy. I used the train's iPhone app to plan my journey, and the timing on the phone was identical to the timing of the train in the station. I always felt safe, from the well-lit, well-patrolled platforms at both ends, to the train itself. There was plenty of room for baggage inside, and the comparatively well-heeled travelers and commuters on board were polite and prompt.

A true transportation delight in a country where a crazy taxi can often leave you white-knuckled and wide-eyed. Excellent value.

The so called magic of the train is that it will get you to the airport quickly and effortlessly at a reasonable cost. NOT SO.

Parking at Rosebank or Sandton still feels like a building site.

Gautrain buses do not accept cash - you have to have a card with cash on it.

Buying a ticket is a mission. Someone got a kickback for buying the ticket machines. They are built for midgets if you are paying by card - and remember your glasses as the display is in small print. So be prepared to crouch, have your glasses close and a torch to see what you are doing. I am sure a forensic audit would reveal some dodgy dealing as to the machines bought compared to the user friendly ones available elsewhere in the world.

Then the trek to the trains down many bank of escalators at Sandton.

The train itself is great and saved the review from a terrible rating.

The walk to check-in is long so don't need to get there too quickly once at the airport.

All in all the drive to a station is about 20 minutes - longer if you take a bus. Ticketing another 5 minutes provided there are now queues. Trekking to the train another 5 minutes. Waiting for the train 5 - 15 minutes and the journey itsself 20. minutes. Heaven help you if you want to travel from Rosebank to the airport in the afternoon rush hour. That train is packed from Park Station and you could be standing with your luggage for a long time to get to Sandton.

Also do not book early or late planes as the train does not operate early enough to catch the red eye flights or late enough if your last meeting finishes at 5pm in Cape Town.

Door to door by car is 20 - 40 minutes total from Johannesburg generally. If there is two of you the cost is over R200 which is getting close to a cab fare.

Road has the inevitable traffic problems but my experience is that these are not as common as expected and you have the flexibility of early or late (delayed) flights.

For travelers it is easy to be dropped at the Gautrain so there is the appeal.

I use this frequently for work and to/from the airport. It is really a blessing and does make getting around so much easier.
