When David picked me up on arriving at Johannesburg airport I knew that I was in good hands.
He and Gladys, a lovely Johannesburg couple, know the Melville area really well and offered a kind hospitality, spotless clean room with drinks in the fridge included and a nice breakfast. The internet works well and I even made some skype phone calls without any interruption.
They referred me to some really nice places, like the coffeehouse and the Leopard restaurant, and would even drop me off there so that I didn't need to walk.
Take the rooms on the backside for most quiet.
Thank you for the super stay... I am returning!

We only stayed one night at Arum Place, but the room was just gorgeous with a small walled outdoor sitting area. The beds were extremely comfortable and clean. And the bathroom had a huge clawfoot-style tub-- a great way to relieve the stress of travel. The breakfast was delicious as well and Gladys was a great host. I don't know if it's mentioned on their site, but they do have quite the menagerie of pets so those with allergies should take note. At night they put the small pups and kittens away, but you can expect to hear a bit of barking come morning. Overall, our stay felt very luxurious for an excellent value. Arum Place is truly a hidden gem.

I have now stayed at this guesthouse on more than 8 occasions which speaks volumes. Every room has its own unique feel and all are very spacious with incredibly comfortable beds.. Tea, coffee, water, soft drinks and biscuits welcome you into your room for no extra cost and the breakfast you receive is of high quality, filling and as fresh as you get.
..... And on top of the high quality rooms at very fair prices, the service that David and Gladys provide is the most personable and accomodating I have ever received. They both go out of their way to make your time with them pleasurable and give you lifts into the area of bars and restaurants at a time convenient to you, not them.
I can't recommend this place high enough. It gets a big 10 out of 10

We all thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at Arum Place Guest House. The owners were extremely friendly and obliging, nothing was too much trouble for them. Breakfast / decor, etc. was outstanding. Thank you!

Arum Place is one the best - and most reasonably priced - guest-houses I've ever stayed in.

The location in Melville is ideal - pleasant quiet streets, loads of trendy restaurants, but close to heart of JB. The guest-house itself is rangy and attractive, and spreads out across the property to give all the guests space. My room was large, airy and luxurious - far better than a comparable hotel - very clean, huge comfy bed, nice sun-filled verandah, and a lot of extra touches (as well as free wifi). The breakfast was huge and delicious. Above all, David and Gladys went out of their way to make me welcome and comfortable. For a small fee, David collected me from and delivered me to the airport, and even though it is a B&B, they were happy to bring me a snack and glass of wine in the evening when I didn't feel like going out. Or drop me down into Melville to a restaurant - and pick me up.

It was nice to chat as I went out and about for my business, but they also respected my privacy. I won't stay in hotels in JB again - I'll stay here.

The guesthouse itself is very nice. We had a big room with a very nice bathroom and a kitchen. In the kitchen there where already some free drinks provided. Also the neighbourhood of Melville seemed to be pretty ok and safe. Only the hosts made us feel a bit uncomfortable. They helped us with everything and we even had dinner there but we always felt a bit if we were disturbing them.

I had an overnight before taking the train to Cape Town. The hosts were GREAT! I was picked up from the train from the airport, then the next day taken to the train station in town---with wonderful advice---and a drop off at the Apartheid Museum. Great room ("Peaches and Cream") with a snuggly bed, wonderful bath and balcony overlooking the area. Breakfast we very generous and well prepared. Will definitely stay again if I get to Jo'berg again!!! Well worth it...
