“Am I in Africa?”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

The area of Melrose Arch doesn't make you feel that you are in Africa, you could be in the US or a Western European city. It feels very safe to walk around the area with its multitude of restaurants and bars. The hotel has just installed a gym on the 1st floor or the Virgin Active around the corner is amazing (resident rate available). The outside pool is fine with a good sunbathing area. They have DJs at the weekend, which makes the internal facing rooms quite noisey. Decor is quite funky with a shower in the bedroom, no bath.

Dear Kjonasher

Thank you for providing us with a fantastic review on Trip Advisor after your recent visit at The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch.

Melrose Arch is a known as “a city within a city” where one has the space to be free and to escape from the fast paced world we live in. We hope that you explored the streets of the precinct and enjoyed all the shops and restaurants that were on offer!

We have listened to our GUESTS and our Fitness Room is a new addition to the services offered at the hotel. Fortunately we have an agreement with the Virgin Active within the precinct to provide access to their facility, for our GUESTS that are in search of a more vigorous work out, upon purchase of a gym voucher at an additional fee. We will be sure to pass on your positive feedback to the TEAM at Virgin Active.

All of our rooms, except our corner suites, offer an open plan shower. The design is often raved about and perhaps a suite would be more to your liking. Be sure to reserve a corner suite on your next arrival!

The hotel is about the atmosphere, about being a third space, – not a home, nor an office. We are always excited to create many new talking points for our GUESTS to enjoy and experience.

Once again, thank you for the great comments and we look forward to welcoming you back for many future visits to come!

Warmest Regards,
The Fire & Ice! TEAM

This is a beautifully appointed hotel in a lovely area. The room is quite large, with a place to work, and electrical outlets for both US and Europe. I appreciate this.

The room layout is interesting with the glass shower exposed to the room. There is a curtain that blocks off the shower from the bedroom area, but not from the entrance of the room. If you are shy, the glass shower may not be for you. There is no tub.

The hotel is sparklingly clean. My only compliant would be the noise from housekeeping at 6:30AM as they ready the carts for room cleaning. They were quite loud for so early in the morning.

I've heard issues regarding internet connection in South Africa, however I did not experience that. Everything worked well.

The restaurant had great food, both for breakfast and dinner. The wait for the food was incredibly long, so I don't recommend going for dinner. Breakfast was self-service and included a lovely variety of meats, cheeses, hot dishes, eggs cooked to order, toast, juice, fruit, etc. There are several restaurants within walking distance, so make sure to get out of the hotel.

The gym was a typical hotel gym with treadmills, an elliptical, and weights. It was a good size for a hotel, and the equipment was in good working order, although the exercise balls could have used a little attention. It was very clean, though.

This is an absolutely beautiful hotel, and I would have given it the highest rating possible if it weren't for the noise and long wait for food in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Stay away from the 1st floor. I was assigned a room there and immediately moved. The 1st floor con...

Dear cyanhead

You have certainly provided us with great feedback and a valued review on TripAdvisor, after your recent stay at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch.

Our beautifully designed rooms receive a great deal of mention and the idea behind our unique design concept was to make clever use of available space and to emphasize the open plan shower. For GUESTS that would prefer a room with a bath, we suggest that one of our sexy corner suites which is the epitome of luxury, to be reserved as this would accommodate our GUESTS needs.

The significance of cleanliness in a public space can never be over looked as it is one of the most important elements when it comes to providing our GUESTS with a safe and comfortable environment. Your kinds words will be extended to the Housekeeping department and we will praise them for a maintaining our magnificent property. As for the room attendants that made a noise in the early hours of the morning, we have addressed the concern with the housekeeping TEAM and stressed the importance of making as little noise as possible when on the room floors as it is absolutely essential for our valued GUESTS to enjoy peace and quiet, irrespective of what time of day it is.

We thank you for your honesty regarding the long wait for meals in our restaurant. We know that all the hard work in other areas is not worth an ounce of effort if we don’t get it right everywhere. We will definitely ensure that our restaurant are up to speed and endeavour to provide all our GUESTS with efficient service delivery.

The Fitness room is an additional service that we provide to our GUESTS as we would like to enhance our GUESTS experience with us. The gym equipment range was specifically sourced and imported for our property to create the feel set by international standards. If you have any suggestions that you wish to share with us to better our offering, please feel free to do so.

We are very proud of our property and the services that we provide. It was an absolute pleasure accommodating you and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Warmest Regards,
Gabrielle Abrahams & the Fire & Ice! TEAM

I stayed here for five days for work travel. I thought the rooms were a good size, the bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed the glass shower.
However - I was staying alone. This would not have worked well for me if I was sharing a room with someone. The toilet was private, but the shower is completely exposed to the room....nice if you want to shower while watching the news in the am.
There are a good number of places to eat within walking distance and the area is known to be a safe place. We were told not to go outside the gated area after dark though.
If you're looking to do some shopping, this is very convenient as it's part of a shopping center, but the stores all seemed to close by 6 or 7pm, so we never were able to do any shopping as we worked until 6 and then had dinner directly after. The stores seem to be upscale, expensive ones. There is a drugstore just a block away, which was nice - it was open from 9am-7pm so plan accordingly if you need something.

The milkshake bar was fabulous- however- it took about 30 min for us to get three small milkshakes. They were thick and delicious - but 30 min was much too long.
The restaurant on the 1st floor - very cool place to hang out if you have time. We went there after work one night, exhausted and looking for a quick meal before heading to our rooms to get some good sleep. The place wasn't crowded at all, certainly not at 6pm on a Wednesday. However, we had to wait TWO HOURS for our burgers. There were only six of us and nobody ordered anything special. We asked the waitress after 30 minutes and she said she would check on the food. Then another 15 min went by before we saw her again. She told us that they were cooking them now. Then we asked again after 15 more min and she said she'd check on them-she came out 15 min later and said, yes, very soon. It's now been over an hour since we ordered, at a time when the restaurant wasn't busy. Only a few other people were actually at tables for food-others were at the bar drinking only. After 90 minutes, she told us the food was being plated. It took her another 20 minutes to bring us our meals.
The food was good - though I think at that point, we would have thought any food was good. There was no apologies for the lateness in the food order and we did not receive any kind of discount or explanation for the delay. This is unacceptable in any restaurant. Had she told us from the start there would be a delay, we could have chosen to eat elsewhere. Had she told us halfway through the 2 hr wait, we could have gone to our rooms and had it ordered up while we unwound from our day. Absolutely ridiculous to wait two hours for a burger.

The breakfast is fabulous-a TON of choices!! I don't know about the costs as it was paid for by the company, but it was a great morning offering, by far the best I've seen.

We all loved the decor - a bit of a modern Alice in Wonderland type feel with the tall back chairs and black and white styles.

I would stay here again - but I would boycott that 1st floor restaurant altogether.

Also - make sure they don't assign you a room on the 1st floor - the music and noise from the bar is quite loud on Friday, Saturday and Wednesday.

Room Tip: The higher your floor, the less noise from the bar.

The Fire & Ice is a great value for money hotel in a safe location, with shopping and restaurants within walking distance. The decor is very modern and quirky, which means it's very dark everywhere. The food in the restaurant is good and the milkshake bar is definitely a must. The room was a decent size and very clean. I had issues with the wifi, but I think that's common in Johannesburg. The service is very casual, but friendly and helpful.

Dear KikiDhollywood

It is absolutely necessary for us to know about our GUESTS experience and we are very grateful that you have taken the time to share your story with us on Trip Advisor.

Without a doubt, we have a perfect location with around the clock security and a variety of good restaurants and shops within the Melrose Arch Precinct for our GUESTS to enjoy. It’s good to hear that you share our views on our ‘sexy’ and ‘quirky’ décor and all is done to maintain the cleanliness of the rooms ensuring GUEST comfort and satisfaction.

Thank you for providing us with positive feedback regarding our delicious food served, we also hope that you had tried one of our naughty alcoholic milkshakes! Please be certain that we will be extending your fantastic comments to the Chef and our Food & Beverage TEAM.

As for the Wi-Fi concerns raised, our network supplier is in the process of doing various available upgrades to the current system which will hopefully facilitate a better service to you.

Thank you once again for taking the time to comment on your stay and we hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back!

Stayed there for 2 nights on a business trip to Jhb. Position in Melrose Arch is good. Lots of restaurants around and my wife enjoyed all the shops. The rooms was good and the bed was great. Feels a bit like a W. Some construction going on whilst we were there which impacted a bit on the overall experience.

Everything about this hotel was to my liking! The service, the setting, the location, the decor, the amenities and the BAR were all top shelf.

The entire hotel is kitted out in very chic and modern decor and the hallways and elevators have super-subdued lighting (verging on dark). The decorators obviously have a thing for oversized furniture, most evident by the 2-story tall sitting chair in the lobby.

The guest rooms were the most unconventional aspect because the shower is out in the open. Privacy, should you need it when traveling with a non-intimate acquaintance, is only afforded by a light curtain that can be drawn across the entire width of the room. That said, an unaware roommate entering the room during your shower will be greeted with an eye-filling view of your nakedness. :-)

The hotel restaurant is wonderful for breakfast and dinner. However, I enjoyed the bar even more because it is a regular nightlife destination for locals. The DJ spins current tunes on weekend nights and there is dancing inside and outside on an open-air deck (note: remember to start partying early because this place closes sooner than you might expect) This is definitely a great place to meet and interact with Johannesburg's upwardly mobile crowd.

Bravo to the Protea chain for allowing this wonderful property to exist. That said, "traditional" or conservative travelers might be better off looking for something less avant garde.

Room Tip: Don't get a room above the bar if you are staying on a weekend night.
