My company had its annual 3 day conference at Amber Rose Country Estate. About half an hour from the madness of Sandton you are in the countryside with wonderful views of rolling hills with shops and restaurants a short drive away.
The rooms are lovely with large comfortable beds, soft duvets and best of all airconditioning which was a necessity as it was 37 degrees during our stay. There is a sparkling pool to cool off in and a very beautiful garden to enjoy. Its only 10 minutes from Lanseria Airport and if your business is on this side of Johannesburg or you are looking for a breakaway not too far from home then this is the place.

We had planned on staying the second week of our SA trip in Sandton suburb of Joburg but the place we had reserved turned out to be a bust (dirty, noisy, and triggered my sons asthma). At the recommendation of our earlier guest house owner, we booked three nights at the Amber Rose. We had a wonderful, and clean two bedroom suite with kitchen and a wonderful second story covered porch overlooking the gardens and valley. The decor and the view from the porch made us feel like we were at a Tuscan Villa. I am sure it would be even more beautiful in the summer. It turned out to be close to the Cradle of Human Kind and also easy to jump back into the city for the SciBono Museum and the SAB World of Beer. Both Jason and Lynn who ran the place were delightful and helpful. They even let us check out lat 5pm when two of our kids were not feeling well and we had a 9pm flight back to the states. A wonderful place we would highly recommend.

We had 36 hours between planes in Johannesburg on the way to a safari. Airport hotels seemed sterile and expensive, downtown hotels bordered on questionable neighborhoods, and the Cradle of Humankind seemed like a suitable activity to work off jet lag. Google Maps showed the location of lodging choices and Trip Advisor provided excellent ratings information. We selected Amber Rose principally because of ratings and because of the positive comments about Lynn’s hospitality.

Lynn’s hospitality began during the booking process where she offered helpful advice about various ways to maximize our extra day. We were also offered a dinner option [which we strongly recommend because the food was excellent and because there are no suitable dining alternatives nearby]. When we arrived at Amber Rose we were disappointed to learn that Lynn had taken a few days of personal leave. And while her replacement host was a pleasant person, she knew very little of the local area and of greater Johannesburg. All the sudden we were less than prepared for our extra day. Sighhh.

Amber Rose [contrasted with nearby Johannesburg and Cradle of Humanity] had a relaxed elegance. The interior is generously decorated in a tidy way with local style. The gardens are wonderful. There is a pool [which we did not use]. The location is in a quiet countryside several miles from the nearest paved road and far removed from city hustle and bustle.

Our room was big with plenty of sunlight to brighten the dark colors. The bathroom was big, clean, and modern. There were very nice upscale toiletries and lots of little extra touches. The beds were exceptional and we had a great rest after double red-eye flights from the States. The Amber Rose has Wifi and it worked without problem.

Dinner was organized ahead of time with the staff. We arranged for a combination of international and local dishes based on the availability of ingredients in the market and the chef’s talents. Then we sat down several hours later to a very elegant affair. Wine – extra charge – complimented the evening. The next morning, breakfast was also exceptional and hearty.

We would definitely return to Amber Rose again.

We returned to Amber Rose and found that it was still the great place we had experienced previously. The rooms have every convenience and are extremely comfortable. Breakfast was superb as usual and stood us in good stead for the day.

We will certainly return on our next trip to Johannesburg.
