I visited Werners Bistro yesterday and decided to have Mitbitter. Best German Beer in the whole of Johannesburg. Really recommend the venison (only when they have it in) otherwise the Eisbein is a definite YES, crispy and really good. please don't forget to try the apple strudel, simply Delicious.

Were invited to attend a lunch break.
Food, sort of Ok, not sure about the cleanliness of the place.
Didn't enjoy, very noisy place, especially when the alcohol run.
Can't take any high profile people here, nor your valuable wife or family.

Whilst visiting Johannesburg in 2013, we arrived later than expected at around 21h15 and most restaurants and take-aways were closed. I had heard that Werners Bistro was a great place to eat, although being VERY popular, bookings well in advance are normally needed.

Being the eternal optimist, I gave Werner a call and asked if there was any chance of being able to stop in and order whatever was easiest and ready in the kitchen, which I assumed was about to close. Being a the wonderful host that he is, Werner was very accommodating and said that if we could get there within 10-15 minutes, he would make a plan for us.

Not only did he make a plan, but we were offered the entire menu to order from and weren't rushed in any way. The meal was incredible and the variety on the menu quite something.

We ended up ordering a diverse choice of foods, from Eisbein (their speciality I understand) to spare ribs to calamari and the portions were really big and pricing reasonable. What I liked about the meals was the fact that the waiters brought a decent choice of vegetables to the table buffet style so that you can chose what veges you prefer and the quantity thereof. Not sure if this normal practice or whether this was due to us being the last patrons being served.

Service was excellent, considering the place was full - and it is a BIG restaurant with various sections or dining areas scattered throughout the rambling house. Well worth a visit, even if it does mean booking well in advance.

We have been to Werners many times and have never been disappointed. Everything on the menu can be recommended , from the pub grub (prego roll is the best we've had) to delicacies such as ostrich, calamari and lamb curry.

The service' atmosphere and setting cannot be faulted.

If you're a prawn fan than Werners is a must on your bucket list. Werners serves the best sweet chilli prawns & a fabulous prawn curry!
