Owner description: Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa- the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa's leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women's Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multi-purpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

The site is very poignant and provides great insight into the cruelty that was meted out in the jails of Johannesburg. Another side is highlighted through the thoughtful outline of the new constitution and its interpretation through the new Court. What a fine tribute to the thoughtfulness of its developers. The art work in the court must be carefully studied to appreciate the work and harshness of the stories.

We scheduled this important attraction for an early afternoon visit, alighting from the Hop On Hop Off bus and proceeding immediately to the ticket office where we were informed that they were closing at 3:00pm i.e. in less than 30 minutes. This appeared to be an arbitrary decision running counter to the advertised closing time of 5pm. We had to rush through the fascinating men's prison but found some rooms already locked by a zealous custodian. We were able to access the Constitutional Court but missed the fort and Women's Prison. There is a lot to see and appreciate here based on other more favorable reviews. Unfortunately, we will not have a second chance to try our luck on the unpredictable hours of operation. Toilet facilities appeared to be basic ( a trailer) but they were locked as well.

We spent 4-5 hours at Constitution Hill total, but could have spent more time to see the court building, old prison and fortress that make up this site. Each have their own highlights. I was somewhat disappointed that they didn't keep the prison very well maintained, but otherwise it was interesting. Kids would be ok exploring the various rooms and passages, and there is a children's room in the fortress. Another interesting aspect of the history of South Africa specific to Johannesburg for adults. Bring some water, and remember there are only one set of toilets near the staircase towers.

What a wonderful place, but such a missed opportunity. The precinct needs a good clean up. There were weeds, dead trees and litter lying about. And due to a lecture the magnificent SA art collection could not be viewed. Very disappointing.
