Owner description: Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa- the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa's leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women's Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multi-purpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

The Court itself, the remaining bits of the awaiting trial blocks, the rest of the preserved bits of the jail and the women's prison are very thought provoking.
Visitors must take the guided tour, otherwise they will not be able to get the whole picture

Difficult to find. Hard to access by car because of all the one-way streets around the precinct. It's amaze! Once you are inside the property though, what a pleasure. I tend to go when there are specific functions because it's rather empty otherwise. A pretty space, and imbued with meaning.

Allow an hour and a half for a cursory visit, up to 3 hours to immerse yourself in the history. Spectacular views over Johannesburg city. I took a guided tour, which I recommend, but also recommend staying longer, after, to revisit the areas of most interest to you. Like the Apartheid Museum, lots of reading and video consumption to be done, which is worthwhile and can take some time. I found the "Freedom Charter" displayed here, and if you don't have a chance to visit, suggest you google it. Very powerful. To understand political 'victims' were incarcerated alongside convicted criminals and the 'debasement' of their treatment is very difficult to have explained to you in a 'museum format', let alone trying to grasp it actually happened. Gives cause to so many other atrocities going on in the world; passed, and happening now as I type this. Overwhelming.

if you are interesested in South African history you should visit both the Apartheid Museum and the Constitution Hill. Together they tell the story of this country.

This place is so wonderful - garrison fort turned into a prison! I actually learned so much and feel really grateful I had a chance to visit. I think we must have spent four hours visiting the fort/prison, Constitutional Court, and women's jail. For me, the highlight was the women's jail which actually houses NGOs. You could get to read the recent accounts of women and their struggle (which actually isn't that well-documented in the Apartheid Museum & Robben Island). I also really enjoyed the Gandhi room - so amazingly meaningful to see his satya graha movement! I cried alot at Constitutional Hill (and of course LOVED the Apartheid Museum but didn't cry there).
