Mbizi Backpackers Lodge

My fiancée and I stayed over at Mbizi's for a night on our honeymoon while transiting from Kruger to Mozambique, flying through Jo'berg. Patrick arranged for a driver to meet us and drop us off in the morning at the airport and set us up with a washer for our clothes. We chatted with him at the bar over beers after we arrived and then went to a great pizza joint that he recommended .

Patrick is a great guy, his hostel is more like a home as others have said and I would definitely recommend this hostel to others! Plus he’s putting in more villas at the end of the garden and that pool looked quite nice and I am sure it is in warmer months!

Patrick runs as owner, manager and barman. He is the only "staff" onsite at night so if he goes off to the pub there is no one around to great guests (we did it for him) and if the power fuse goes, locate the box and fix it yourself. Having said that it is a simple house to stay over for a couple of days, it was good for us as it is near the airport and we wanted to drive to the Krugger the next morning and it is on the East side of town.
It was quite empty when we were there. But the shared living space is nice place to chat to other quests. There is a bar with a pool table in it that wasnt open when we were there but it seems pretty nice.
We stayed in a double ensuite room. Good shower, decent size room.

My husband and I stayed at Mbizi on our first night of our honeymoon before moving on to Enkosini wildlife sanctuary! We were met at the airport by Mbizi's owner, Patrick, who is the most charming, hospitable and funny guy, who loves his cricket..!
We stayed in the double-en-suite, which I have to say was spotlessly clean and cosy. I would just like to say that it was winter in J'burg and rather cold, so to be told that there were electric blankets on the bed was just wonderful..!
There is wifi and internet acess, a washing machine and tumble drier ( which we took full advantage of after returning back from 2 weeks at the wildlife sanctuary)! A wonderfully large lounge, with an uncountable amount of DVD's, videos and books. A very comfortable and inviting bar with BBQ outside in the garden, with pool table and Sky t.v and a fridge stocked with all the best beers from around the world! For me, the perfect setting to be watching next years 2010 World Cup. I say perfect because there is also a huge pool in the garden along side the BBQ and bar .....!
During our trip to South Africa we stayed at Mbizi twice. It is extremely convenient for the airport, with Patrick arranging all pick up's and drop off's and at a very competative rate. Patrick is always available, whether it be calling on your behalf for a local take away, offering advise on things to see and places to go, he was a great host and made our stay a comfortable and relaxing one.
Thanks Patrick and sorry it has taken me sooooo long since out stay to write this review.

We were promptly picked up at the airport by Nicholas and driven speedily to our backpackers. The room was spotless, although a little dark and decor left a little to be desired. It has a laid back bar where stories are shared among fellow travellers. Patrick, the owner, serves a good Springbok shot! He is full of chat and knows how to tell a tall tale!
Overall this place was perfect for a cheap night in Joburg and a great location to get and from the airport. There is also a great little restaurant just down the road, which is safe to walk to, called the Pelican. The food is tasty and service is faultless.

We got picked up from the airport and taken to Mbizi's. It was like showing up at someone's house and they're not home. Didn't meet Patrick till the next day, but I just made myself at home anyways. Good sized place, nice big screen tv, bar area is nice. Overall a good place to stay, just be prepared to pay cash for everything, no plastic.

Had a great stay for 2 nights. Patrick was really helpful and friendly. Got a very cheap airport pickup which was great and the hostel was clean and tidy with good sized lockers in the rooms.
The pool and bar were excellent and theres a supermarket and pizza restaurant a short distance away.
Got to meet the owners friends and had a braai (bbq) with them which was really nice.
The location is nice and is safe. This does mean that the hostel is not very central but this is true for most of the hostels in J'burg and that means they are in a safe area. Transport can be easily arranged from the hostel to wherever you would like to go.
Overall its clean, safe, cheap, friendly, has good facilities, can arrange tours/activities and was a great place to stay. I think i'll be back next year for the world cup. Cheers Patrick!

15 mins away from the airport and the owner Patrick picked me up on time. Relaxed safe environment with a swimming pool and pool table in the back. A clean hostel, a lady cleans every day and it's a self catered kitchen with a pick and pay close by. I booked the Aparthe museum tour, the baz bus and the Kruger national park from here which was tres easy! A definate first call to break the south African Ice.
