“A real mix--but GREAT staff!”
Reviewed May 19, 2011

This hotel (part hostel) is located right by the airport, which is very helpful, and there is a nice shopping center withing walking distance. It's in a gated community and surrounded by a high wall, so it is very secure. There is a pool and bar and cabana, and the breakfast is quite good. They also serve other meals, although not on a large scale (ie: they have a decent menu but you have to wait a while for your food). The rooms are smaller but clean and nice. They do have several dorm rooms that really pack in the bunk beds, leaving very little space for suitcases and such. The staff have been excellent. For example, we had several suitcases not make our flight, and the staff worked hard to track them down for us, going so far as to call a personal friend, who went into the KLM storage room, and then drove the luggage to us after midnight one night. It was unbelievable and very very wonderful. The students with whom I was traveling greatly appreciated the good-looking and charming bartender (this must be a hallmark of this hotel, because they had a different bartender several years ago who was also good-looking and charming...perhaps to sell more drinks?) In any case, while not a luxury place, it certainly works well as a solid place to stay while in JoBurg, and I'll come back again the next time.

One thing: while they have internet, it is expensive!

I was stuck in South Africa on my travels and I ended up staying at this wonderful place the staff are so friendly and helpful and they made sure that we were kept up to date on flights that maybe departing and they prepared the most wonderful breakfast and also dinner buffets. We were able to go to the airport to check on our flights so many times cause there shuttle is complimentry both ways it was so helpful. When I knew I would be there at least a few days I was able to go on day tours and explore a city that I was not meant to stay in. So a bad situation turned out better than I would have thought.

Wanted to stay a night passing through joburg, rang to make an enquiry about a booking, they asked for my credit card details even though I was only making an enquiry. I phoned an hour later as I had actually made a mistake in our flight arrival details and said we could not get there. They said that was fine, no problem. I was under the impression I would not be charged as you naturally would. They took the full charge of the stay from my credit card and when contacted by phone and mail, they were unhelpful and actually implied that I had not called to cancel and said I had threatened and slandered them. I wonder how much money they make this way. Lovely people.

We had a super bad experience there.

1. Free drop off and pick up to the shopping mall, except they forgot to pick us up! We had to call them and waited there from 18.00 (which was the agreed pick up time) till 20.30..
2. We made a booking for a Soweto tour and a visit to the lion park ( fee 1100 ZAR). However, the weather was really bad so the guide advised us to go to the “appartheidsmuseum” instead. He promised us that the balance of 500 ZAR would be refunded. We never got it back…
3. We made a reservation for a drop off at the airport at 5 in the morning – no driver to be found..

So we will never ever go back there!!

Luckily we only booked one night here, we definitely wouldn't go back! We arrived to be greeted by a very rude receptionist - clearly in the wrong profession! Our room didn't have any electricity on arrival (although this did get fixed). Rooms were incredibly basic and not at all inviting.

Fees for transport were very high - we shared a minibus into Johannesburg with 6 other people - they paid the same amount between the 6 of them that we were charged for the 2 of us (£70 return for a 15/20 minute journey!!) The driver even had the cheek to demand a tip on both journeys.

Glad that this hotel was an exception to the South African rule as our other hotel experiences around the country were fantastic.

This is a cosy place with very neat decorations with African theme. There is a pool, sauna, pool tables, laundry services, secure parking etc. Buildings are painted with very warm colours which gives a nice ambiance. The property is in a very secure cul-de-sac (monitored with cameras). It is located near the airport which makes it a good choice if you are in transit (although the hotel broshures are a bit misleading about the distance to airport). Having said all these positive points, the reception was awfully unhelpful and rude. When we have buzzed the bell by the front door to get access with our car for the first time, apparently due to the problem in the buzzer, the bell repeated several times, which consequently cause the receptionist yelling at us at the intercom. Indeed this was a very unfortunate start, and when we told that we buzzed the bell only once, the receptionist was not apologetic. This bad start marked our experience in this hotel, and not getting the laundry at promised time did not help either. In contrast, the lady at the bar was nice and friendly.
