“Decent and functional”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Arrived in unseasonably cold weather, it even snowed on the single night I stayed. Unusual circular layout of hotel with all rooms enjoying a central window or balcony overlooking garden and pool area, bet this pleasant in summer. This does make it a fair walk to rooms as corridor is on the outside but not a problem. Room was spacious and functional. Enjoyed a good steak in attached restaurant although service was a bit slow as is common in SA. Restaurant ambience and style good for a calm business dinner. Wine choices good, just had to ask for red to be put on a radiator as was too cold, probably due to eceptional ambient temperature. Had an early checkout and breakfast was very good and swift at 6.30am.

The hotel is average and ok for business travel as I was out most of the day. The rooms are neat and clean. The draw backs are: that the tv is old and the visual quality poor; the aircon was also old and noisy and there is no lift in the hotel, you need to carry your bags up and down plenty of stairs and the breakfast area is very small, when it gets busy there aren't enough tables for the guests.

The reception staff weren't very friendly and as I am a frequent guest member this was dissapointing. They dont seem to care that you are a frequent guest.

Stayed in a standard room close to reception, rooms was clean but “old school”. Decent in size and well equipped, the only downside was the old television set. Sleep comfort was great, good quality linen and extra bedding located in the cupboard. Air-conditioning was also old school and noisy, it was a cold night so I never used it.

Reception staff were not friendly at check in, in fact it seems like I was disturbing their Sunday afternoon by checking in late. At check out staff did not know their own processes with regards to payment and this lead to some delays.

My room opened up onto a patio and overlooked the pool area, nice!

Bathroom was clean and big but also old, shower was located in the bath tub and the quality of toiletries was inferior (it’s a good thing I carry my own)

Room service menu was great and food quality was of an average standard. The breakfast buffet had a wide spread although I only had some cereal. I had a lunch box packed for the next day, a great service but pathetic quality of food – one of the worst sandwiches ever!

To sum up, hotel was great for one night and one does not have many options for Bloem. I must admit, in my opinion the hotel is leaning towards a three star rather than four

Room Tip: Get a room close to the entrance!

The hotel is old and in desperate need of a revamp. I would not recommend staying at this hotel, the rooms are old, carpets are very dirty and bathrooms do not feel clean. The hotel is very expensive for what you get. Breakfast is good, but for the rest I would rather not stay here again.

It's a good business hotel! The service and friendliness of the staff were excellent and the garden area was perfect for relaxing. The room was clean and well equipped although looking somewhat dated - housekeeping was very efficient.
Breakfast was good with plenty of choice - we didn't use room service but experience over the last 40 years is few hotels can get this right. There's plenty of local restaurants close by.
I've been travelling into Bloemfontein for the last ten years and tried other venues but always come back to the Southern Sun.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms can be a long walk from reception so ask for something not too far away.

I spent a weekend night with my family. Front desk staff is friendly. Rooms are large and fixtures are OK. As someone else said in their review, this hotel is spread out. Better to ask for room closer to reception. I had to walk 5 minutes to my room.
Breakfast was Southern Sun quality. Very good. Butter tasted full body. Yum.
Hotel is connected to a shopping mall next door by a covered bridge. This is very good as you do not have to walk under the sun. Shopping mall it self is same as the one in Joburg.
I would recommend this hotel to both business and holiday travelers.

Room Tip: No elevator, ask bell to carry your large luggage. Ask for room close to reception or stairs from r...

Why not to say in the Southern Sun Bloemfontein for a business trip
1.Room service food took more than an hour and a half
2.The vegetable and haloumni wrap had a piece of chicken in it!!! And the wrap was soaked in sauce – it was horrible
3.The power points in my room did not work and even after requesting to be shifted to another room, the request was not honoured
4.I received random phone calls from other rooms
5.The layout of the hotel is strange – ask not to be placed in the wing where rooms 155 etc is located – you have to walk up and down multiple staircases and with suitcases this is extremely inconvenient
6.No lifts - what modern hotels has no lifts!!!
7. No free internet! Hotels in SA cannot afford not to provide free wireless connections. Its a minimum / hygiene factor

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool is pretty nice. Dont choose rooms on the floor starting with 150 - inconveni...
