Description: Awarded the Best Restaurant 2011 Eastern Cape award from the Tourism & Conservation Board, Five Elements is unique to St. Francis Bay, the only purpose built restaurant in the region, is set amongst new vineyards, indigenous forest and olive orchards. Our chef emphasizes the use of seasonal, fresh , locally produced ingredients from the surrounding Kouga region which are carefully combined to create the exquisite dishes on our lunch and dinner menus.

I had a dish that I will remember for a long time: a Seared Tuna starter. It was done in such a unique way and that is how the rest of the meal is served. Not traditional restaurant food, but delicious, creative experiences.

The place is beautifully presented and the staff are charming. But it is the sort of place that makes you feel self conscious the moment you set foot in it. Our waitress was keen to stress that they were a fine dining establishment, she mentioned this quite a few times when she was going through the menu.

We expected to be wowed. I ordered Cape Salmon and was disappointed to find that amongst one or two other things it was accompanied by an artichoke which was taken straight out of a jar ( I recognised the taste. I have a jar of artichokes at home) It was hugely disappointing. Only a few days earlier I had the most sublime Cape Salmon dish at a beach cafe in Jeffery's Bay, Kitchen Windows, I heartily recommend the place.

Pudding was a joke. everything was more or less liquidised and presented in a shot glass. There was no other choice. It's OK if a shot glass of frothy sweet tasting stuff is one of the options, but not the only option.

Next time we'll be at Chez Patric.

Five Elements was recommended to us by the owner of the B&B that we were staying in in St Francis Bay. It is situated out of the way near the port and is down a shared driveway with a residential estate so you really need to know about it to find it.

You must reserve a table and when we arrived we found out why. We were greeted as we pulled in to the car park by the owner who was charming and made us very welcome. We were shown into the restaurant (which is in two converted aircraft hangers, stunningly decorated and very light and airy) and seated in one of the reception areas on big sofas by the fireplace where we were presented with our personalised menu (they take your names from your table reservation) and offered an aperitif.

The staff are outstanding, all very knowledgeable and very friendly. The food is unbelievably good. The wine selection and quality was also great.

Four us had aperitifs, starters, main courses, desert, coffee and wine and the bill came to ZAR 1,100. Fantastic value.

Their deserts are served in a shot glass just to give you a sweet treat rather than anything too heavy after your meal. Of course, you can have as many of these as you like depending on hunger level. We thought this was a really nice idea.

This was the best meal that we had in South Africa. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.
