We stopped first at the Hampton Inn but it was full--though it looked like nobody was around.* We then went to the Kayenta Monument Valley Inn, and though there were tons of people milling around, we got a room--because it was VERY expensive, much more than the nicer-looking Hampton.
Our second-floor room smelled like cigarette-smoke-masked-with-lots-of-Glade. The windows were bolted shut, and there was no sprinkler in the cottage-cheese ceiling. We were happily close to the stairs in case of a fire.
Sleeping was okay, not tooo noisy--but we'd rate the hotel as being in the $49 a night category, not the $199 a night category. Breakfast at $25 was overpriced.
Its proximity to lovely destinations, and the scarcity of lodging for hundreds of square miles around explain why this old dog can still do any tricks. Next time, we are reserving in advance at the Hampton Inn.
*Probably looked empty because of people who had wisely made reservations ahead and hadn't arrived yet for the evening.
