Owner description: THE MUSEUM It is designed to challenge conventional views of museum design. It draws on the work of Andreas Huyssen who has written extensively on the concept of memory and history. Visitors are not treated as consumers but active participants. The conventions of representing history as a single story are challenged through the design of the museum spaces. The past is represented as a set of memories that are disconnected yet bound together by themes.

Dont be afraid to go there by your own, it is more safe than you think. Everyone/everybody should go there once in a lifetime - it make you think, grief, hope.....

This has to be the must go-to place in Port Elizabeth. A fine new building set in the middle of a township which was a centre for anti-aparthied struggle, it show the reality of that struggle for local people. It is very moving and informative. Take no notice of the idea that the neighbourhood is dangerous. The museum is certainly hard to find and needs better signage. It is best to take taxi. But all are welcome. Take a coffee at the nearby Red Lodge or even stay there and take a township tour.

A must-see for any traveler to Port Elizabeth and/or South Africa so that you can be educated about the realities and legacies of Apartheid and the related resistance movements. An impressive museum in a architecturally stunning building.

Provides a very interesting and thought-provoking overview of the Apartheid era in PE. Given the location, it is understandably one-sided in its analysis, but definitely worth a visit.

This is kinda empty, displays are poor, and it's obviously an ode to one point of view, reminds me of the Soviet Union museums, it may need some time before a realistic museum is done about that period of time.
