Owner description: Calabash Tours Nelson Mandela Bay was formerly known as Port Elizabeth, and is situated on the Garden Route. Hosting excellent Blue Flag beaches, attractive architecture and interesting British as well as Xhosa heritage, it is a ‘must see’ inclusion on any visit to South Africa. Nelson Mandela Bay offers the perfect conditions to explore and understand contemporary Black culture, with 75% of its 1.4 million residents being Xhosa speaking, proud and hospitable. Steeped in responsible tourism and pro-poor tourism thinking, our ground breaking approach allows visitors to access, understand and appreciate the social history of the people, their day to day experiences of being black South Africans during apartheid, as well as during our emergence as a democracy. Our experiences are real, authentic, and ethical. Calabash Tours is owned and operated by a dynamic team, who share a vision of tourism being a powerful development tool, while balancing the social needs of the poor with the desire by our visitors to have fun, to learn, and to engage with the South African people in an ethical way.

We wanted to do a township tour but weren't sure which organisation to go with. I have to say we were not disappointed, We did the "Real City Tour" and took 2 children which we were slightly apprehensive about initially, but soon realised we were in safe hands. Our guide comes from the township and seemed to know many people. He knew the history of every building in the main city and the ins and outs of life in the townships. He pointed out many activities going on that would have gone unnoticed if not pointed out to us. We visited a township school where we were warmly greeted by the headmistress.

Despite 20 years passing since Aparteid the disparity in life situations between rich and poor is still very evident and is something which our kids will appreciate thanks to this informative tour.

It is nice to know that 25% of the money we spent on the tour is fedback into projects within the townships and it was good to see some of this through the craft shops, school and other projects which we visited. If you are going to P.E you MUST do a township tour to appreciate the real side of this amazing city. These guys show you this all in a matter of a few hours. Well done guys

A visit to South-Africa is incomplete without a guided tour to the townships. As foreign visitors we have a totally wrong idea of what a township is.

Calabash Tours offers a tour called "The Real City Tour" (http://www.calabashtours.co.za/tours.html). They start with the traditional sightseeing points of Port Elizabeth and then they take you inside the townships. And the guide explains about the history of South-Africa and how people in the townships work to improve the quality of their life. Very interesting! And don't be afraid - it's 100% safe!
And a very important remark: a major part of your contribution for this tour is used to support the people from the townships. They call it "Fair Trade Tourism South Africa".
I would like to thank Calabash Tours for giving my family the opportunity to feel the "real" South-African life !
