Emily Moon River Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 29, 2012

Our stay at Emily Moon earlier this month was first class. The lodge is run by the incredible Di and Simon Valentine who couldn't be more welcoming and can't do enough to help you. I must also mention Katie, Vern and the head chef who are fantastic people and made our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms are stunning, with the most incredible view of the Biton River. If you can, take a canoe trip along the river, it is so peaceful and a great chance to spot some beautiful birds.

Every morning, Di or Simon would come down to breakfast to help plan your day - there is such a warm family atmosphere, you won't want to leave!

As for the food, it is first class. Every meal without exception was fantastic, and the ambiance and decor or the dining area is wonderful, not to mention the first class service of the staff.

Overall, Emily Moon is a must for anyone staying in the Plettenberg area. The warmth and friendliness of the place, along with the sheer luxury of the lodge is a winning combination.

Our stay at Emily Moon was the highlight of of holiday in South Africa. Our room was outstanding, while the restaurant food was superb. The service was of the highest order, especially from the owners who took time to chat and offer valuable advice on places to visit. The perfect package! Dot and Terry M.

Room Tip: Room 3 was perfect because of the view.

It really is that good!
We were given Room 8 - enormous! Beautifully furnished with African artefacts, indoor and outdoor showers, massive, comfortable bed and balcony overlooking the river.
Cooked breakfast was delicious but the food in the restaurant in the evenings beggars belief. The menu changes nightly, the quality doesn't. You can keep your Michelin stars and celebrity chefs, this was sensible sized portions of amazing food in a charming restaurant. Also, coming from the UK, the value is incredible.
The owners (Simon and Di) are on hand at breakfast to offer suggestions on how best to fill your days and will make bookings for any of the local attractions for you.
As animal lovers, we did an afternoon safari at the Plettenburg Game Reserve, walked with elephants at a nearby sanctuary and took cheetahs for a walk at Tenikwa - a fantastic experience.
We were very grateful to Di for suggesting the drive up to Knysna Heads. Passing some stunning properties we drove up to the viewing points over the Indian Ocean - spectacular!
If you have any doubts regarding where to stay near Plettenburg Bay, book the Emily Moon. You'll be so glad you did.

If you have any questions, just ask.

It really gets no better than this. Magnificent location with great views. The Lodges are just wonderful and even have open fires for those chillier nights. Bathroom excellent with bath positioned to enjoy marvellous panorama. You can canoe on the river in Emily's canoes if you fancy it. Breakfast first class with home made goodies a plenty and the restaurant has a fabulous menu at very reasonable prices. We ate there on 3 of our 4 nights, which his very unusual for us.Di and Simon Valentine run E M for their son. They are terrific hosts and engaged with very guest over breakfast to help them with their plans. We stayed in 7 locations on our 3 week trip, many of which were very good, but this was the best. If you plan to stay in Plettenburgh then plan to stay here.

Room Tip: there are 2 new rooms at the back of the hotel, one of which would be excellent for a family. Howeve...

I was going to call this place a B&B, but it really isn't one, it's in a category all by itself. The location is magical. Just off the N2 (the Garden Route), you head up a steep driveway and enter "Oz". The "rooms" are individual luxury cabins, large and extremely comfortable, with fireplaces and huge bathrooms with both a shower and bathtub. Fresh firewood was stacked perfectly each day to start a fire each evening. The veranda overlooked a tranquil river valley. The service was impeccable, with even our rental car being washed each morning. The restaurant is a local favorite, but as a guest of the lodge, we had a reservation each night. We didn't have to give a time, the table was held for us "whenever we chose to eat" during dining hours. The dinners (not included) were superb by the fireplace. . Breakfasts were sumptuous. The grounds were magical and the pool looked like it would be lovely in warmer weather. As an added "attraction" Simon, the owner, sat with us in the morning to help plan the day's adventures. His knowledge of the area was impeccable. The nights we stayed a Emily Moon will always be a cherished memory of ours. Five circles are not sufficient, we can not recommend it highly enough.

What a truly beautiful place Emily Moon is. Fantastic location overlooking the meandering river and awesome rooms. We stayed in the garden suite which was absolutely stunning. The beds were luxurious, we had a lounge area with open fire if required, a patio areas outside and two vast baths. We canoed along the river in the guest canoes during the day and relaxed around the pool in the sunshine listening to the vast array of birdlife. The restaurant, in the evening especially, is uniquely beautiful, and decorated in a style which has clearly been well thought out. It was so relaxing to sit by the real fire overlooking the pool for our pre-dinner drinks. Don't miss this place if you go along the Garden route, it is an absolute Must!! The Wills family UK
