“Spectacular hideaway!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2009

This is probably by far the, one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed at! Lily Pond is a fabulous hideaway along the Garden Route. It's a short 20minute drive from the main town of Plettenberg Bay, but that's not so bad as they have a restaurant on site which serves a fantastic, fresh, 3 course set menu which changes daily. The breakfast is also wonderful and great after a swim in the beautiful black slate pool (salt water, not cholrine which is evern better for your skin too!). The tranquil surrounds are encouraged by a lovely lily pond which surrounds the property so all rooms look out onto the pond and are very private. There is also a jacuzzi on site which sits on the edge of the lily pond - the whole place is incredibly romantic and I would recommend it to anyone looking to stay at Plettenberg Bay. Don't be discouraged by the drive from the main town.....I guarantee you, it's well worth it. The owners have done an immaculate job in setting this place up - this was truly the highlight of our trip along the Garden Route...thanks so much to our travel agent, Tanya Veriera, at Go 2 Africa for finding this wonderful place and putting our itinerary together for South Africa. We had a fabulous time and we look forward to using Go 2 Africa again to organise our next trip to Africa.

The smaller rooms, although not large, are comfortable and more than adequate for a night or two, but if you are staying longer you may prefer to go for a suite. The Lodge provides evening meals – a very necessary option since it is in a fairly remote location with no practical alternative to “eating in” being available: although the food was excellent, note that it was a set menu with no choice when we were there. The layout of the dining room made us feel isolated with little chance to talk to other guests – you may feel that is a good thing, but we thought it a bit sad.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable two-night stay at Lily Pond Lodge. The hotel is perfectly located, just a few minutes drive from Nature's Valley (watch out for the baboons as you drive down!) and half an hour from Storm's River Mouth. Our room was open plan, with two terraces, an outdoor rain shower and a jacuzzi bathtub. The setting is second to none. The infinity pool is freezing but thoroughly refreshing. We found the hotel's owners to be incredibly friendly, and full of useful tips. The food in the restaurant is limited to a setr menu with one choice for each course, but this never bothered us as the food was of such a high quality. This was the best place we stayed along the Garden Route.

We spent two nights in Lily Pond in the luxury rooms. We didn't see the standard rooms, but the luxury rooms are just wonderful. Great feeling, the open bathroom (the toilet is separate and closed off though). Toiletteries are great. The atmosphere in the restaurant is great, breakfast is wonderful. Dinner is really really nice. Lily Pond is quietly situated in the Natures Valley, easy to find and easy to reach. It is a great stop only half an hour from Plettenberg Bay. If you really need to chill out, I suggest you stay a week.

I have to say that when it comes to the Garden Route I sometimes cringe as I know there is such a mixture of fly by nights and class all mixed into one pot. What I experienecd at Lily Pond Lodge was warm staff, beautiful accomodation in a truly peaceful and beautiful surroundings with loads and loads to do in the area. The food was of an outstanding quality and the service from all staff tremeandous and as a single traveller I am well aware of how sometimes staff can feel uncomfortable about how best to deal with you. I was joined for dinner by the owner Margret and her friend from the Netherlands which turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip down the Garden Route. The rooms are spacious and has catered for every need before your even aware it is a need! A great spot well managed and just far enough off the beaten track to provide an idealic hideaway in the heart of the Natures valley area.

The Lily Pond had been recommended to us by another Portfolio member ([--]). Coming there, we liked the tranquil atmosphere of the pond garden and the cool design (Honeymoon Suite). Dinner and Breakfast is high-class, also. And it is a very good location to explore Tsitsikamma and especially Nature's Valley. We got extensive information for the sights every morning. Now, what is the disadvantage of Lily Pond? I must say that, compared to other similar places we have stayed at within our South Africa Trip, the dedication of the hosts to the guests is just not that warm. The hosts leave you the feeling that they like to draw a line between themselves and the guests. And we had one very dissatisfying experience, where we asked to be seated at the fireplace for dinner in the morning, and ended up to be placed near a windy door instead, while the owners with some friends were sitting at the fireplace. No excuses or even comments were made about it. But, all in all, not a bad location in the area.

  • Liked — House itself and setting
  • Disliked — sometimes not 100% feeling welcome

Dear Marc & Suher,

I have read your review and like to make an apology if we gave you the feeling that we as owners were not dedicated to you and gave you the idea that we like to keep a distance between ourselves and our guests. This really surprized us as we like to have the opposite. In the past 5 years we have made many friends and a lot of guests return to Lily Pond because of this personal relationship. The only reason I can think of, is that like you wrote in your review we had friends over from Holland which we haven't seen for 5 years and gave them a bit more attention what may be couses less attention to you as guest. The incident with the reservation for a table next to the fireplace I discussed with our morning staff including Heidi our morning host & receptionist, but nobody was aware of this reservation and we didn't know either. On both sides of the fireplace there are tables for 4 people and that's the only reason we took that able. Of course if we should have known your request we simply would have taken another table. By the way the table you had now is still the most popular and most reserved table because of the view. I know SA is far away, but I like to invite you both and offer you a dinner for free in our restaurant and if you like we can share a table, so you can find out that we are not the persons you describe in your review........

Looking forward to see you again.

Last year my husband and I visited Lily Pond for the 6th time. A few years ago Lilypond was recommended to us by people we met in Santa Barbara, California. All our visits were fantastic and we have already planned our next visit. Niels and Margaret are excellent hosts and the staff is friendly, competent and very helpful.
So far we have tried a different room every time. It was an experience to stay in a large beautiful luxury suite. During our last visit we stayed in one of the smaller standard rooms, I liked the furnishing (colours) and the cosiness of this room. Also the view from our patio was wonderful.
The food is delicious and the atmosphere in the dining room is very relaxing. Although we've seen the environment many times now, we can't get enough of it. We like visiting the Birds of Eden, it's only a 10 minutes drive, it's a wonderful place to go for a walk. The beaches in Natures Valley and at Keurboomstrand are very quiet and it's nice to stay there for a while.
If you want to see game, go to Buffalo Hill or Rhino Base Camp it's worthwhile. We recommend Lily Pond to all our friends!
