“Warm and Friendly Service”
Reviewed March 28, 2012

When I first went to the Beacon Isle more than 10 years ago, I didn't much care for it, but over the years, and particularly since it's major renovation last year, I've really come to appreciate this resort. Refurbished with clean and modern lines (although the bathrooms are a little cramped), the service levels have been raised and staff are warm, friendly and helpful. Maintenance issues where dealt with promptly, quality of the food in the restaurants was good and prices extremely reasonable. The spa is a treat with a good range of treatments on offer.
The Beacon Isle is a timeshare resort so plenty of activities are laid on for guests. We tend to use the hotel as a base from which to explore, but it is equally good for just spending lazy days lying around the pool, or walking on the fabulously long stretches of beach on either side of the hotel.

Room Tip: If you can, select one of the east facing suites to enjoy spectacular sunrises.

We have just spent a week in Plettenberg Bay and the holiday was idyllic. The rooms are tastefully furnished and the staff pleasant. There are a number of restaurants with upper moderate prices and moderately good food (do not buy the ridiculously expensive muffins!). However, more than excellent restaurants and coffee houses in the town. One of the lounge areas is right on the sea and on the lawn there are lots of loungers to relax on! Views of the sea and some of sea and beach are spectacular. Don't miss going to see the Knysna elephants and monkeyland (like being in a jungle with plenty monkeys to see in the wild under the watchful eye of a guide) - the hotel had a trip to monkeyland and other attractions and bus into town each day, but best to hire a car when flying in to George. Hotel provides entertainment as well. A drive into Knysna is worth it (only about 30 mins) just to take a cruise to the Knysna heads eating oysters and drinking champagne! Weather - perfect, blue skies and sunshine with very little wind. No tabs and you need to pay for food by card or cash or hotel token. There is a fridge, but no crockery/cutlery. There is apparently a microwave near reception for use of guests. Best: Location is beautiful and there is plenty to do outside of the hotel if you don't want to just lounge around. Worst: Can't think of anything.

Room Tip: Corner suites are larger. We were on Robberg side of hotel with great sea and beach view (room 405...

We stayed here the first week in February and must say that it has definately improved from when we stayed there 10 years ago. The staff were very helpful even parking our car. My suitcase somehow got damaged and I was concerned about getting it back to the UK with my clothes still inside. The mainenance department kindly repaired it for me and it got me home with no embaressing moments. We had this through RCI and whilst was disappointed we were not given the room allocated on the booking (as this would have been larger) we were fine.

We played golf at Plettenberg Bay golf club which was superb. We had a caddy by the name of Gilly so if you need a good caddy ask for him.

There are lots of nice restaurants to eat in and the town of Plett is lovely to while away a few hours. We also were fortunate to take a trip up the river and braai on a small beach area. Cannot wait to go back!!

Room Tip: Try to have a room with one of the few balconies overlooking the sea. Dolphins in the bay nearly ev...

Having never having been there before, I left saying " Now why did we never bring our children here???" (OK so we had a holiday house closer to home.) Stunning location. Magnificent beaches next door.... but you don't have to leave the premises to have a good time. Several restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools plus entertainment plus lots for the kids to do make it the ideal family holiday destination. For those who cannot afford a cruise, this is the closest that you will come to the feel of such a vacation at a fraction of the expense. My only regret is "Why did it take me so long to finally experience it?".

Room Tip: As high as possible looking out to sea.

Recently stayed there through a timeshare exchange. I seriously think they need to change their chef as most of the food is really substandard. They do not tell you when checking in that you cannot sign for food and drinks and that all catering is outsourced and whats more they do not advise you that you can purchase a prepaid cash card to pay for your meals and drinks with. Overall the entertainment is poor and is used to try and disguise the poor food quality. Other than that rooms are good, although small bathrooms and if one id prepared to just sleep there, there are great restaurants in and around the area outside the hotel

We used our time share points for this destination. It rarely comes up as available but when it does you should take advantage. Its location is superb and Plettenberg is a good location for a week's relaxation. Plettenberg golf course is excellent as are many local restaurants. Would not recomment Plett Bay Game Reserve though - most of the animals are seen as you drive the long trek to reception

Room Tip: When temperatures exceed 30 degrees the room ceiling fans struggle to cope. Aircon was just too exp...

We spent the last week in a suite at the Beacon Island and I cannot rate it highly enough. The suite is huge and when we stood on one of our three balconies we were literally hanging over the water with waves crashing on rocks under us. The shower overlooks the water and is in effect, an outdoor shower with views of the Robberg Peninsula. On two occasions we watched whales from our balcony. The hotel is newly renovated and fresh and comfortable. We were often tempted to just lie on our bed and read, as there were exquisite 180 degree views of the sea from our bed. There are also great beaches - one on each side of the hotel as well as so many places to visit by car. The suites all face east and we left the drapes and huge sliding doors open and we were woken each morning with a stunning sunrise.

We did not take advantage of the hotel entertainment or the hotel swimming pool but rather used the suite as a base to explore the garden route. We walked the beaches of Brenton-on-Sea to Buffels Bay, and also explored the remote, beautiful Goukamma nature reserve and hiked in Nature's Valley.

The hotel staff could not be more caring and attentive. Our only complaint was the pillows - quite hard and lumpy, but 5 minutes after I complained to a passing maintenance person, he had notified housekeeping and 2 feather pillows were in our room. Thank you everyone for making our stay so wonderful. We will be back again and again.
