“A Spectacular Hotel: Spectacular Lifestyle Choice”
Reviewed November 2, 2011

Like a giant ocean liner riding the waves - the gleaming, white superstructure of the landmark Beacon Island Resort Hotel is surrounded on three sides by crystal-blue sea, and stands in a picture postcard setting. The luxurious six-storey, 4-star resort was constructed in the 1970’s and has just undergone a multi-million dollar make-over. This is definitely the place to stay and is one of the most amazing resorts in the world.

The architectural design of the huge foyer - with its concentric, open corridors - is reminiscent of nothing less than a seaside version of Momo’s grand stairway in the Vatican Museum or Frank Lloyd Wright’s internal design for the New York Guggenheim! (I kid you not.) There are superb amenities - but it is the views of the distant, blue mountains, the private beach overlooking the sea and the rolling, sun-drenched lawns beside the pool that make this dream destination one of South Africa’s finest.

Added to the delights of this amazing venue are the hotel's superb restaurants offering freshly prepared sea-food, the succulent catch-of-the-day, sushi, and tasty traditional favourites.

A friendly welcome, a great climate, an over-abundance of sunny days, superb whale-watching and famous beaches are all guaranteed to delight.

The magic of Plettenberg bay resides in its coastal setting, its tidal energy and the intriguing rocks and caves that have been inhabited since the dawn of time. Go down to the sea and enjoy a drink on the rocks in the old ‘captain’s cabin’ on the Coral Reef: a fine-dining restaurant at the Beacon Island Hotel. Here, surrounded by nautical décor and long-stemmed roses - the timeless waves, behind the huge plate glass windows, will literally break around you.

Plett lies on latitude 34º. This idyllic stretch of coastline, sparkling beaches, white sands and virtually sub-tropical vegetation is as perfect a setting as planet earth can provide. It is the special combination of unspoilt, wild beauty; sweeping, blue vistas; intrinsic elegance and studied luxury that makes it so unique. (This is a village as well as an international playground!)

We have visited the Beacon Island Hotel for many years now, and, after travelling far and wide, have to rate it as one of the best holiday destinations in the world. Go there. Enjoy. Daphne Beames

Just stayed for a week at the Beacon Island Hotel. Its just been refurbish and a lot of money was spend towards creating and saving energy & money by using more green products. The staff at this hotel is very friendly & there was'nt one dull moment during my stay. The hotel have its own restuarants with food at very reasonable prices. You can also enjoy a lot of other activities in the area, whale watching cruises, golfing, kayaking, skydiving, etc.

Room Tip: Thiers a big variety available, sea facing - great view but no sun, east facing - sunrise very early...

What a fantastic location , with some amazing views.
That was the only two points that had any 5 star standard left from the 1990's it is now nothing more than a veyr cheap version of 70's butlins or a bad carry on movie.
All restaurants do not belong tot he hotel like they used to hence standard aand quality lacks , effeciancy and basic customer service is beyond dire.
I was told when asked as i had not been at this hotel for over 15 years that it all changed and was downgraded and a lot of good staff left , Very Clear that is the case.
Sorry but it is now a no returner . Rooms basic and standard , as i said above views location thats all. Not worth the Rands spent. .

Room Tip: Higher rooms to get away from the noise below and the attempt to entertain.

This hotel has recently been upgraded so the rooms are new and modern. The accomodation and feel of this hotel is top notch and worthy of their star rating.
It has a superb location with wonderful sea views. The beach walk to the Robberg is a must if you have time .
Restaurant is outsourced and service and food is not up to the high standard. The lack of a cosy pub makes for a loose end in the evenings unless you partake in the 'shady pines' style entertainment. WiFi is available in the lobby at a surchrge.
I will certainly return.

Room Tip: walk across the beach to the little pub for a great sundowner experience

This hotel/resort is really tough to review as it doesn't seem to know what it is. Bingo and staff review shows make it feel like 1970s Butlins (and at times little noisy), but the location is fantastic. A lack of technological integration and the fact that almost everything is outsourced means that you can't charge anything to your room (surely there's a way in this day and age to sort this out!). Rooms are small (I'm resisting the temptation to call them 'pokey') and without air conditioning, so the comfort of your stay will depend on the weather. It's also pretty pricey for what you get. NB: Worth noting that in 2011 the building is to be refurbished.

However, the pool area is glorious, the access to the beach is splendid, and there are lots of local retaurants to go to if you're bored with the hotel fare.

Also, weirdly, the front desk can't tell you when some of the restaurants (in the hotel!) will be open or closed as they don't co-ordinate that information with the subcontracted facilities (despite them being only about 10 metres apart)! Other weird things are an absense of any sort of TV channel guide (not even a photocopied piece of paper with the channels listed, and when you ask for something like that the front desk staff looked blankly at you).

If the venue could decide if it was a resort or an hotel, it would perhaps be easier to judge it, but as it stands, it is very hard to decide whether it's excellent or mediocre.

Limit your expectations, and you'll love it. Don't expect too much in the way of service, expect oddness in entertainment, or just go for the views and the beach, and you'll love it.

The clientelle appeared during our visit to consist almost entirely of young families with children (very good for kids) and retired people.

At the end of the day, they'll always have the sea views and that bar that hangs out over the rocks. Hard to ignore that.
