“Grace, Elegance, Distant Mountains and the Sea”
Reviewed December 17, 2011

The gracious art of living reaches new heights at ‘The Plettenberg’: a Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel in Plettenberg Bay – one of South Africa’s most exciting, dream destinations. Nestling on the stunning coastline of the Western Cape’s Garden Route – between the lush, green of the sub-tropical Tsitsikamma forests and the sparkling waters of beautiful Formosa Bay – an elegant, long white mansion stands waiting to offer an unforgettable stay, fine-dining or the afternoon tea experience.

If you have a penchant for taking tea the elegant way, there is nothing better than at The Bay. Relax in one of the attractive lounges or poolside on the al-fresco terrace and enjoy an atmosphere of soothing sophisticatio; make your choice from a superior selection of the finest teas; and enjoy impeccable service while indulging in delicious tea-time treats. Personal favourites include: classic smoked salmon and crispy bacon sandwiches, followed by rich chocolate gateau, mouth-watering carrot cake or homemade muffins topped with organic preserves. All this – and a ‘table with a view’, too. Not to be missed.Only problem is tht after your feast - you will have no space for dinner and probably no appetite for rambling on the magnificent beaches. Recommended by Daphne Beames.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the bay

It had been 10 years since we stayed last time - Had forgotten just what a superb setting this hotel commands over the bay. Simply superb. A wonderful time, relaxing, great position, pool and restaurant all second to none.

Highly recommend to stay in SA

From its beautifull position this hotel offers the very best in service, accommodation and cuisine. We had a magnificent corner room affording wonderful views over Plettenberg bay and were made to feel very welcome by the manageress and her friendly and efficient staff. We also enjoyed the varied and delicious food in the relaxed dining room; in fact we were so comfortable in this hotel that we had to force ourselves to go out to see the many attractions nearby.

If you visit Plettenberg this hotel is the place to stay. The manageress is an absolute delight when she welcomes you and the staff are very friendly. Johan, the assistant manager is so friendly and is genuinely interested to hear where you come from from. The food was the best that we ate in South Africa and we ate in a lot of top quality restaurants during our stay in SA. The views from the hotel simply take your breath away and the setting is perfect for a short stroll into the town centre. This hotel is amongst the best that we have ever stayed in judged by any level of standards that one could think of. If you are going on the garden route then try this little bit of paradise.

Room Tip: Opt for a room with a view over the pools if you can. This also gives great views over the bay.

From the friendly, efficient service at check-in, to the fixtures and fittings in the bedrooms, through to the excellent cuisine and the lovely views of the ocean, the Plettenberg exudes class but in an understated, relaxed, non 'showy' way.

Our stay at the Plettenberg last week coincided with my father's 90th birthday and we are delighted we chose the Plettenberg to mark the occasion - the 'tasting menu' in the Sand restaurant was top notch and our experience at breakfast equally so - great food with the added bonus of a simply stunning view of the bay.

If such things matter, though, do ask for a room with a view of the ocean otherwise you may end up in a room overlooking the road at the side - not that this should put too much of a downer on your stay.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the bay, make sure to specify this.

A beautiful hotel with impeccable service. We were welcomed immediatley by the hotel manager and check in was swift and efficient. We had been upgraded to a spectacular room which was modern and very comfortable. We had a terrace to enjoy the views or room service. The menu for both room service and the main restuarant Sand, was a little limited and uninspiring for a 5 star hotel, however the quality was excellent (we had Steak & Chips for our main). We could not compliment the staff enough, particualry when I was taken ill one day. This is a perfect choice for those who wish to relax and be spoilt.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the swimming pool/bay not only have the best views but are luxurious and very spac...

We stayed in the Plettenberg Hotel as part of their extreme experience package (Bungee jump, sky dive and canopy tour). Despite poor weather conditions we had a fantastic stay and arrangements were made to rescedule our activities to meet our needs by the very professional and personal Johan. This is a beautiful hotel with excellent views and the staff were very welcoming and friendly.
