“Lovely but deceiving”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2011

Get a decent map, do NOT rely on the car park attendants map because it is totally inadequate. We set off from the car park on a short 2 hour walk. We ended up being rescued and were safe at 22.30 after sea rescue came for us. See the pictures, its a long story but there were no path markings and ended up stranded on the beach. We just could not find a way out, it wasn't pleasant at all.
Unable to get help from emergency numbers given on the silly map, I rang my son in England (quite an achievement due to very poor signal) and he texted me another emergency number to ring. The police were not interested because they were busy fighting real crime, not helping tourists (quote)
Sea rescue came for us at 20.15 with drinking water. Then the really hard bit, the rescuers got us back up over rocks, very rough terrain, climbing some height and we reached their rescue vehicle at 22.30. They were wonderful and we are grateful for their assistance. They checked us out and had coffee and chips for us because we hadn't eaten for ages and we didn't take water because it wasn't hot, just pleasant and we thought we would be fine. Yes well !!!!
The rescuers were stunned when they saw our map because they have been raising concerns about this problem for a long time and had recently had to rescue others who could not find any paths.
We have never been so relieved in our lives.
We are not stupid people and thought by arriving at 13.00 hours after a light lunch, having a 2 hour walk across the area would be ample time to get back to the car park before it closed at 18.00 hours. (Taking into account looking out for wildlife etc and photographs) How wrong we were.!!
However, it is a lovely place to visit but do have a decent map.
Oh by the way, the rescuers had to get the police because our hire car was locked in the car park and the attendants who took our mobile numbers did not inform anyone that we were still on the peninsula when they went home.
We were very lucky but I would go again if I was there now I know whats its like.

“Not for the faint hearted!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2011

There is lovely scenery here, but if you are heading to other coastal areas, you are likely to get better views of whales in the right season (Hermanus especially). The walk was really tiring in places, and the whole thing took us 5 hours! Good views of the seals, no dolphins sadly. Definitely worth a visit, just be prepared if you are taking the long route!

Great walk but there are some pretty strenuous and difficult scrambles and climbs.
