Amakaya Backpackers & Apartments
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 14, 2012

Traveled with hostels and backpackers for over 1 year. This backpackers is one of the best accommodations. They have everything travellers want and need. Staff was so friendly, maybe more than a staff, like a friend. They were helpful as well. anything you need, just go to the receiption and ask. They will do all they can do for you. The room was perfect. Clean and cozy. Definitely want to go back there if I visit Platt again. Thanks for everything!

Room Tip: no swimming pool

All the places recommended by the staff worked out! The room was very comfortabel and clean. The only thing that was a little bit anoying was the police car outsite. We continiously heard the radio buzzing.

I stayed at the Amakaya Backpackers for two nights and had a really good time. Staff was very helpful with finding out what to do in Plettenberg Bay and around (thanks again for the shuttle service, it really was an experience to go by motor bike). Nice and clean rooms (stayed in a dorm), liked the atmosphere.

Although I have only stayed in around 5-10 hostels during my lifetime, Amakaya is definitely that which I was the most fond of and would recommend any backpacker looking for somewhere in Plettenberg Bay to choose. my flatmate and myself went to for a long weekend to Plett Bay and picked Amakaya not sure what to expect. After making the booking over the phone (where i spoke to the wonderful and friendly manager Dave and on another occassion the friendly co-owner Dorothy) I was sure they'd be welcoming hosts and i wasn't disappointed. We arrived a few days later to be greeted by Dave at recepion who not only spent over anhour talking to us about things to see neary but also advised on the other places to see on th rest of the garden route towards Port Elizabeth! We were really overwhlemed. We then met another lovely co-owner named Mary who made us feel welcome as well. Dave then showed us around the hostel (which is more like an extended house) The rooms and facilities are all wonderful. The rooms were very neat and clean and there was a nice lounge (including a TV and DVD, computer with Internet access), kitchen, bathroom, bar area and balcony we were allowed to use. We really felt a part of the household within an hour or two and to top it all off a wood fire as lit later in the evening and all the fellow guests and ourselves all sat round and chatted. My flatmate and felt really like we were teenagers out on a summer camp!

Anyway, I can't praise Amakaya enough. It is a lovely little guesthouse which Im sure all people looking for somewhere fun, clean, cosy and welcoming will have a fantastic time staying at.

I was fortunate enough to stay at the Amakaya for three days in September 2010. I was greeted by Mary, the manager, on my arrival and she was immediately very friendly and went out of the way to find me the room and the price I preferred. The bunks were wide and comfortable and the decor very pleasant. The shower and toilet facitlies were luxurious.Mary arranged the trips I took and also the transport to the venues, arranging an early morning trip first of all toTenikwa cheetah rehabilation centre leaving at 6.45. Mary was happily abroad at this hour to see that everything ran smoothly, and from then on both she, Dave (the owner) and his wife Dorothy made every possible effort to ensure that my stay was as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible. I had lost my camera the day before I arrived and Dorothy lent me hers for the day and put all the photos onto a flash drive for me. Dave made suggestions for trips I might enjoy, and found out the times and prices so that I could get the most out of each day.
I was looking for a quiet hostel at night with the possibility to take part in as many activities as possible in a short time during the day. To this end, Amakaya more than met my expectations.
