A really pleasant setting and with real olde world charm. Food was really good especially the pork belly that was out of this world. Worth a try don't think you will be disappointed.

My wife and I were joined by another couple late last week at The Cock House (Norden's Restaurant at the Cock House) for an aperitif (very reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in Grahamstown), starters, entrees, and desserts. This evening we ordered the soup of the day (creamy tomato, homemade, savory and wonderful), escargot in a garlic cream sauce with homemade bread (tender, tasteful and not overpowered by garlic), and a prawn salad (properly cooked, chilled, and dressed). Our entrees were the vegetarian option of a bruschette with garden vegetables, a grilled filet mignon, the braised lamb shank, and the day's special of linefish, all of which were served with garden vegetables and mashed potato. The praise for the meal from those at the table ranged from very, very good to excellent. The filet was prepared as ordered, medium rare and a very high quality of meat. The braised lamb fell off the bone, was complex in the flavors of the braising liquids, and tender. The linefish was fresh from the coast, cooked just a bit past perfect, although not dry or tough, and flavorful. And, all of the vegetables were steamed perfectly. Our deserts, again ranged from the pear crumble to the Creme Brulee to the cheesecake, and no one was disappointed.
In a review of Norden's restaurant, I had noted that the prices were a bit more than other restaurants in town. After having this last meal with our friends who have lived in Grahamstown for the past 8 years, I learned that the restaurant's prices have not changed since they had first visited the restaurant. With that in mind, The Cock House (Norden's at The Cock House) is a true bargain for those who are "foodies." My wife is serious in her desire to eat here once a week for the remainder of our time in town. We'll become a regular by the time our visit is over.

In March 2012, the 1982 Victoria Girls High School Matric Class celebrated their 30 year reunion over the schools (VG & Graeme College) Founders Weekend. I was the organiser on behalf of the VG Old Girls from my class of '82.

As the Cock House is steeped in history, has a lovely ambience and a great restaurant, I suggested that as many of us attending the reunion stay there and that we have our reunion dinner at the restaurant. The Cock House staff went out of their way to ensure that our dinner was a great success. We were even able to invite the guys who were with us in 1982 from our brother school, Graeme College, to join us for pre-dinner drinks in the bar before our dinner.

Jean-Louis, Oswald, Jessica and the rest of the fabulous Cock House team of the time helped to make our reunion weekend such a roaring success. The excellent service and efficiency , coupled with friendly personal attention was wonderful. Not to mention the food which was delicious and beautifully presented.

The feedback I received from the ladies who attended the Reunion (some stayed at The Cock House and others just attended the dinner) were all complimentary. Everyone agreed that it was the perfect venue for both the accommodation and for the fabulous food.

The only downside is the location which is on the edge of town opposite a shopping area but the back garden and parking area is enclosed by a large wall and our cars were all comfortably and safely accommodated.

We were also able to sit out in the garden and enjoy our sundowners and catch up with one another after 30 years!!

We will be back now for the weekend 8-10 March 2013 for the Victoria Girls High School 1983 Matric 30 year Reunion for which I am also the organiser. I have already contacted The Cock House to make arrangements and am looking forward to staying there once more.

Great, this is around the corner from where I live. Even though it is so close I still choose to go into town as this restaurant is formal and can lack atmosphere if the fire place is not on. The food is more expensive but it is worth the money

Not worth it Rather average food quite far away from the centre in a run-down part of town. Quaint features but not worth the price
