My wife and I were joined by another couple late last week at The Cock House (Norden's Restaurant at the Cock House) for an aperitif (very reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in Grahamstown), starters, entrees, and desserts. This evening we ordered the soup of the day (creamy tomato, homemade, savory and wonderful), escargot in a garlic cream sauce with homemade bread (tender, tasteful and not overpowered by garlic), and a prawn salad (properly cooked, chilled, and dressed). Our entrees were the vegetarian option of a bruschette with garden vegetables, a grilled filet mignon, the braised lamb shank, and the day's special of linefish, all of which were served with garden vegetables and mashed potato. The praise for the meal from those at the table ranged from very, very good to excellent. The filet was prepared as ordered, medium rare and a very high quality of meat. The braised lamb fell off the bone, was complex in the flavors of the braising liquids, and tender. The linefish was fresh from the coast, cooked just a bit past perfect, although not dry or tough, and flavorful. And, all of the vegetables were steamed perfectly. Our deserts, again ranged from the pear crumble to the Creme Brulee to the cheesecake, and no one was disappointed.
In a review of Norden's restaurant, I had noted that the prices were a bit more than other restaurants in town. After having this last meal with our friends who have lived in Grahamstown for the past 8 years, I learned that the restaurant's prices have not changed since they had first visited the restaurant. With that in mind, The Cock House (Norden's at The Cock House) is a true bargain for those who are "foodies." My wife is serious in her desire to eat here once a week for the remainder of our time in town. We'll become a regular by the time our visit is over.
