Styled as a bistro, this restaurant is situated a few minutes safe walk from the top of the High Street. Appears to have a good local reputation and was recommended to us. We found the menu to be limited but the steak meal we had was very good and the service efficient with a smile. Good.

One of the finer dining spots in Grahamstown is Haricot's Bistro on New Street, just a few minutes away from Rhodes University and St. Joseph's College. During school season, it is advised that one reserve a table because the restaurant can be busy with visiting weekend parents. They offer seating both inside and outside in a small terrace area, but the windows and doors are kept open such that the al fresco atmosphere is maintained even if you're seated on the inside. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with images of Paris, and one gets the impression of the French atmosphere.

The kitchen serves a limited menu, offering three different appetizers, 6-7 entree courses, and three desert courses. Each course is priced similar to what one would expect in a larger city such as Cape Town or Joburg, leaving the expectation of that there will be a similar quality to the presentations, service, and taste. The recent night when we dined there, my wife ordered the Karoo lamb cutlets served with a pepper sauce. French preparation? Not really, but pretty much a staple preparation for South African palates. When two lamb chops covered in sauce arrived on the plate, we were surprised. Not just surprised that these were lamb chops, but also surprised that the medium rare preparation was well done. The waitress actually tried to tell us that lamb cutlets actually are lamb chops in this part of the country. I ordered their beefsteak to be served rare. The meat was seared on each side, with a bright red coloration appearing at the sides of the cut. When cut, the inside was more on the blue raw side that rare side, as requested. I would have returned the meat to the kitchen for a few more minutes on the grille, but our waitress never returned to see if the meals were satisfactory until we had progressed in our dinner, some 20 minutes later (when we learned about how chops are cutlets).

Of the three desert offerings, we opted for their cheesecake which came unaccompanied with any garnish. It was, literally, a slice of cheesecake on a plate. Creamy, smooth, and with a hint of flavor, it was unclear as to whether the desert was prepared in house or
outsourced to someone else.

Our experience at Haricots Bistro leaves us with (1) a meal, albeit tasty, didn't meet what was advertised on the menu or expectations about its preparation requests; (2) service that was inattentive and slow (patrons who arrived and ordered after we had their meals served
at least 10 minutes prior to the arrival of ours); and (3) the impression that the atmosphere is the part of the dining experience that comes closest to French cuisine, and not the food.

The service was very slick, the decor great. This dining does not rate on a par with the French restaurants in Franschoek but for Grahamstown it's great.

Nice place to meet for coffee, On a hot day the tinkling sound of water in the fountains in the courtyard adds a special feel..

This restaurant has a very good wine list and lovely seasonal menu. Food is always well executed and fresh, portions are generous and well priced. Go to the deli for fresh artisan bread and visit the cheese & fish shop out the back
