“A dream honeymoon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

My new husband and I were lucky enough to spend the first two nights of our honeymoon at the fantastic Woodbury tented camp. We were so impressed with this amazing place. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with a coctail and things only got better from there! Our guide, Matt, took us out on 4 game drives in total ( one of which was a river cruise and fab for bird watches) where we saw everything we could have imagined and learned SO much from the very enthusiastic and experienced Matt. The tents are superb and quite glamorous really, I prefer to call it glamping! The bed was so comfortable and enourmous. Then the food topped it off, three course dinners that blew us away and as we were on honeymoon the excellent staff set up a private breakfast for us on the patio of our deck!! Chocolates on your pillow at night and chats round the campfire after evening game drives make this a must for everyone. This has been the experience of a lifetime, don't miss out!!

Room Tip: All tents are amazing but ours (no 3) I think had the best views and felt really private.

My husband and I recently stayed here and had the most wonderful experience.
The tents are extremely comfortable and clean. Whilst you're out on afternoon game drive, staff go into tent to turn beds down (with a chocolate on pillow) and turn lamps/lanterns on. A nice touch.
Food was excellent-thanks chef!
The staff were wonderful who looked after us- thank you. Thanks so much for the beautiful lantern lit dinner by the pool- a wonderful touch. Nothing was too much trouble.
Finally, to our ranger Kyle Ansell. He was awesome. Funny, witty, intelligent and passionate about his country and its animals! A credit to Amakhala. Keep up the good work!!

Room Tip: I didn't see all the tents but Tents 3 & 5 have great views

I wasn't sure what to expect but enjoyed every minute of our 3 day stay at the tented camp. The staff could not have been more welcoming and kind, the service wonderful, and the animals and bird life a great experience which we will never forget. Our Ranger, Matt ,was very knowledgable and enthusiastic , with a special excitement in our regular viewing of caracals(lynx) which are normally difficult to spot, and cheetahs, which we were most excited to see. A great place for photos . A point for fellow novices- we felt very safe in our luxury tent , with only an occasional spider the only wildlife in the camp.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable three day stay at Amakhala Woodbury tented camp. As a couple, (pre children) we had been on Safari before in Kenya and wanted to give our 13 year son his 1st experience at the end of our South African holiday. It was a huge success, we had a wonderful time and we can’t praise the staff highly enough.

Our ranger guide was Kyle who combined enthusiasm, a deep knowledge of the area (and it wildlife) with a very hospitable and cheerful personality. As a double act Kyle and Jason (the other guide) couldn’t have done more for us and we certainly all learnt a lot from the experience. Their views on conservation and heartfelt descriptions of the challenges that are faced by Rhino’s in the area certainly made us all think and want to contribute in some way.
The park area was spectacular with the sun set from ‘God’s window’ truly breathtaking. In our game drives we saw the full range of animals (Cheetah, Giraffe, Elephants, Buffalo, Lions) and what was so special about the experience was the guides enthusiasm and knowledge, not just for the larger creatures, but also for the amazing variety of birds and even the spiders, crickets and snails.

The camp area itself was very comfortable and the food (although a little basic) was very fresh, tasty and perfect for the much needed ‘re-fueling’. After each days safari a camp fire would be lit and stories exchanged over a few beers and toasted Marsh Mellows. We met like minded people from UK, France, Denmark and Germany and evening meals at the shared tables had a nice community feel to them.

The tents were large, airy and comfortable enough with warm (if slightly temperamental) showers. The proximity of the tents to the wildlife takes a bit of getting used to and it’s best not to let the imagination take over when listening to the occasional scurrying sounds. The impressively large spiders also take a wee bit of getting used but they are completely harmless (although we couldn’t persuade this to the teenager who suffered the indignity of one, slowly lowering itself onto his head at the dinner table).

If you want something a bit different to the slightly more sterile, luxury lodges in a scenic, peaceful setting with enthusiastic/knowledgable guides and the company of some like minded people then Amakhala fits the bill.

We stayed at Woodbury tented camp for four nights, and it was a great experience! The wildlife viewing was spectacular, from the larger animals down to the smallest. Our guide, Matt, was very knowledgeable and a true wildlife enthusiast. This was our first safari experience, and thanks to Matt we were able to see a variety of animals (Elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, lion, jackal, cheetah, caracal, kudu, eland, gnu, 70+ species of birds, and more!) and observe their behavior in a natural environment. By our last game drive, we had learned a great deal, had some very memorable animal encounters (especially the encounter with one of the male elephants on a narrow road--he did not want to share the road and chased us out!) and the and have a greater appreciation for wildlife conservation.

All of the staff were great and made our stay very pleasant. The food was excellent and the hospitality first rate. The view from the tent was spectacular, and we saw a variety of animals while relaxing between drives. The stay in the tent was very comfortable. We did see some (disturbingly large!) spiders and a skink in the shower area, but it was part of the experience of staying close to nature, so we can't complain!

Enjoyed a three day stay here and could not fault any of the staff .Our driver,Matt, worked hard to show us what he could of the park and we enjoyed sightings of cheetah, lion, elephant ,jackal, not too mention a good selection of plains game.We were especially lucky in our sightings of caracal including one on a fresh kill with it's cubs.Scenic park and good to drive around in.Accommodation was fine, tent was comfortable and spotted giraffe, bushbuck, zebra and oryx from our veranda.Spiders which appeared in shower area were only drawback for my wife, but easily dealt with and harmlessWelcome from Jessie was very warm.

Quiet and peaceful, uninterrupted view of the bush - saw a giraffe and zebra in the far distance from our room and deck, no other humans or buildings in site.
Amazing safari, just the two of us in the vehicle with the guide for 2 drives. Enthusiastic, fun and knowledgeable guide (Matt) showed us amazing mammals (large and small) and beautiful birdlife.
Highly recommended, and better than more expensive lodges we stayed in in the same reserve.
