Great place to stay overnight...! From the moment the gate opened we felt as at home. The very relaxed staff, clean rooms, good beds and the colourfull decorated house, nothing bad to say. Thanks to some tips we did some nice trips on our way to the Wild Coast and even a secret recipe agains the pain in my back. (haven't tried it yet, maybe talking about 'sardines' was enough;)!

Cheers guys... keep it up and thanks again!

We wanted to break up our trip from Bulungula to Tsitsikamma and staying here was a nice change of pace. Beautiful old converted home just out of town, we felt like we were staying in our own home. We had a 6 person dorm that was spotless. The bathrooms are clean with super-hot showers. The staff is nice and makes you feel comfortable. The kitchen is clean and well stocked. There is a lovely back elevated porch for relaxing and a small common area near the kitchen for hanging out. The town itself was quiet since the college kids were off on break. It was nice to see a colonial town with tree lined streets. We would stay here again.

The hostel has a good atmosphere, but the beds are the worst ever. I prefer sleeping in chinese beds then this one, finally you pay for a bed and that was terrible. Atmosphere and the free wifi were ok.

No longer in the old jail, Whethu is a bit out of downtown Grahamstown. The facilities are pretty basic, but this is a developing country. Rooms are tidy and decent, Paul is a great cook and has plenty of stories to share. Actually, all of the "lost boys" are characters, and that's probably what makes this place interesting and worth staying at. Our room was right next to the lounge, and that is a bit annoying when people talk all night or keep the TV on, sound carries very well. The "kitchen" looks a bit rough, but is more than functional.

The tours are reasonable, you'll probably have a more interesting tour with these guys then with a more official looking bunch. particularly if you get chased by a Rhino. This isn't a place for people wanting luxury accomodation, but if you want to meet interesting and funny people, experience a more chilled out perspective on life, stay with these guys.

Room Tip: ask if there's space in "the cave". Don't get the 4 bed room right next to the lo...

Unique experience of spending a night in a 182 year old refurbished prison cell, complete with graffiti scratched into the cell walls--great fun. 3 bed room was small, but surprisingly warm and comfortable, even in winter. Also communal toilets and kitchen. The old gaol boasts a pub and is a watering-hole for students.

Very good prices and central location in Grahamstown. I would highly recommend to backpackers and budget travelers.
