Beacon Bay outlet is pleasingly decorated, adequately clean with a welcoming ambiance. Staff are generally friendly and despite being newcomers to SA are making admirable headway in communicating with patrons. We and our guests opted for the Sushi selection.
It takes several years to train a good sushi chef and I am of the opinion that the Shanghai sushi chefs have some way to go. It would be unfair to compare Shanghai to an upmarket Japanese eatery so the commentary below is made with an average Chinese family restaurant in mind.
While our meal was acceptable and fairly palatable, I made the following observations:
The rice was moderately overcooked and 'porridgy', too densely packed and tasted bland.
I suspect the Wasabi paste was diluted with a flour of sorts as it lacked the power of the 'real thing'.
One final 'horror'. A waitron with body odour should be sent home or shot. It is one of the most off-putting crimes against humanity in general and the food industry in particular. Any restaurant that tolerates less than faultless personal hygiene in their employees is not worth visiting again.
